It can’t be worse than the last version (actually looks a lot better already)

Every last second of music in that trailer is awful, so please God don't let this be nominated for Best Picture because I do not want to have to sit thru two hours of that

You will have to watch Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing at the Oscars. Sorry I don’t make the rules.
I actually like this trailer a lot despite not caring for the music.

I have a firm "Mute all performances unless they're by Sufjan Stevens or Amy Adams" rule for the Oscars

Re: A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018)
It wouldn't be the Oscars without a bombastic performance, although soulless bombast (see trailer) is less grating than histrionic bombast (see the nominee from The Greatest Showman).

The great thing about all the various versions of this story is that they are each very much of their time. This one will be no exception.

which may be why each version is worse than the previous oneWerewolf by Night wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:49 pmThe great thing about all the various versions of this story is that they are each very much of their time. This one will be no exception.

Casting Gaga might've been a good idea 4-5 years ago but her career has been on the skids for a while. If you wanted to cast someone who can sing, act and is relatively popular, at least ask Selena Gomez or someone.

My biggest question is why didn't we make one of these in the '90sWerewolf by Night wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:49 pmThe great thing about all the various versions of this story is that they are each very much of their time. This one will be no exception.

Re: A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018)
There's certainly been musically driven films (if not full out musicals) in the past few decades that revolve around the same idea.
Anyway, a hip-hop version seems like a natural idea - not only for hip-hop's place in the current culture (i.e. both the center of popular music and the most cutting edge work being done) but also how many times has a major rap artist been helped and introduced to the world through an older one? Dr. Dre and Jay-Z alone have found quite a few groundbreaking discoveries (Eminem, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, etc.).

Oh, to have had a version of this that ends with Eminem, tears streaming down his face, saying into a HOT 97 radio mike, "Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Dr. Dre..."

We could've had Ja Rule introducing Ashanti, and her career on the rise (at least for one song) whilst his went downhill. Or something.hearthesilence wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 4:11 pmThere's certainly been musically driven films (if not full out musicals) in the past few decades that revolve around the same idea.

This was originally going to be directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Beyoncé. Not sure if this is better or worse

Pretty sure objectively worse if just because I suspect Eastwood has a better taste in country.

I like Eastwood as a filmmaker. Lemonade is a masterpiece. At the very least, the results would've been interesting.

You're not wrong in terms of her album sales, but she's only recently gained any credibility as an actor with her appearance in American Horror Story: Hotel.thirtyframesasecond wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:53 pmCasting Gaga might've been a good idea 4-5 years ago but her career has been on the skids for a while. Also Begin Again was pretty much an unofficial A Star is Born remake. Let's hope this isn't as clueless as that one was about how music is made, though

(Not that I'm actually making a Gaga/Garland comparison—just thought it was an amusing parallel.)

I like the casting because you don’t see her as Lady Gaga and instead see her as an amateur version of Marisa Tomei.

Selena Gomez isn't even able to sing her own songs well...thirtyframesasecond wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:53 pmCasting Gaga might've been a good idea 4-5 years ago but her career has been on the skids for a while. Re: A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, 2018)
Pretty hard to imagine Gomez convincingly playing a spotlight-shy songwriter who has lines like: "Almost every single person has told me they like the way I sound but not the way I look."
