I think it's the worst film in its TCM set, and I like it a lot! Mogambo and Splendor in the Grass are two of my favourites from their directors, and Now, Voyager features what more and more I think might be the Bette Davis performance in its vivid exhibiting of her various modes (and none of the films are on Blu)Drucker wrote:I wish I knew about it sooner, but I tuned in 2/3rds of the way through Love In The Afternoon, the 1957 Billy Wilder film last night. Looked really great, definitely in true HD, and in the 1.78 aspect ratio. Does this film have a good DVD release anywhere? There always seems to be a Wilder film I didn't know about that I have to see!

Re: Upcoming Movies on TV (US)
This looks like fun. A theme on TCM this month is "Condemned Movies," films that were condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency. Some choice titles include The Story of Temple Drake, Lemora - A Child's Tale of the Supernatural, Baby Doll, and um ... Ice Castles(!?).

Baby Doll is of course the go-to for this theme. I always introduce it to my students with the warning that according to the Church, we'll all be going to Hell just for watching it-- always gets a great reaction!

I find Baby Doll is still quite edgy, even today.
SpoilerShow
Aside from the more famous transgressions, the aunt Rose comfort and the peephole/crib in the bedroom thing gives me a John Waters feeling about that house.

Wenders' absolutely amazing Until the End of the World (which was restored as part of Janus' tour, and released on BD in France (now OOP), but isn't on Filmstruck or anything) will be airing in full early on July 24th (the TCM website lists a 3 hour running time, but it's scheduled for a full five-hour block). Pretty likely to be released by Criterion soon-ish as I think it's the last Wenders title they're sitting on at the moment but should be of interest to some.

Re: Upcoming Movies on TV (US)
Well, this thread doesn't get much life in it. It would at least be nice if people posted some of the rarities or interesting finds they come across and warn us so we can record them.
TCM is in the middle of their "Summer Under the Stars" month, which usually precludes most interesting things -but I did find a few:
WEDNESDAY, August 15 (Peter Finch day)
The Shiralee (1957) - Was particularly difficult to track down before the Ealing Studio Rarities DVD series
THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 (Marcello Mastroianni day)
Ginger and Fred (1986)
Family Portrait (1962)
The Pizza Triangle (1970) - what a title
Also glad to see that SYFY is playing a million different variations of shitty shark movies:
Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda
Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf
Trailer Park Shark
Jersey Shore Shark Attack

I think Mac and Me might be timely because people found out about its alternate 'cop shoots disabled kid' scene

Granted, these WTF choices are all part of their TCM Underground segment on Friday nights, which has been shifting to more and more contemporary choices over the last few months. There's something to be said for a network that will show The Garbage Pail Kids Movie back to back with Borzage's The Mortal Storm!

On Tuesday, June 4th at 4:30 AM (PST)
TCM is playing the film I championed for the 30s project, that nobody watched: Zou Zou (1934)
If you don't watch it this time, I'll still be mad.
