La Jetee and Sans Soleil have both been listed on the Forthcoming Criterion List (No Speculation) as a possibility through New Yorker Films. I'd say a Janus logo is a nice new piece of evidence.

La Jetee have not appeared before with a Janus/Criterion connection. This is great re-assuring news.

I do. I was surprised that Criterion didn't go after Crimson Tide around the time the CC did both of the Michael Bay films. Did they happen to show Tony's Agent Orange as well?

BTW, I actually quite liked Boy and Bicycle. Apart from some of the very un-teenager-sounding prases during the stream-of-consciousness interior monologue, it reminded me of some of the days I played hooky -- especially the fact that, if you're by yourself, the day can be even more dull than going to school.

I saw Boy and Bicycle a little while ago (as it is an extra feature on Scott's the Duellists) and thought that it was very inventive and fun (the same could not be said of most of Scott's work, however)

Does anyone know if Criterion is planning on releasing anything by Max Ophuls? I just searched amazon and can't believe there's not one half-decent release of any of his movies.

Criterion owns many Ophuls movies including the Earrings of Madame De... Next time you should try posting these questions under the Ramdom Speculation thread.

I'm not sure about Criterion, but you might like to know that good versions of 4 Max Ophuls films have just been released today in the UK by Second Sight (I've just bought them all in fact). The films are: 'The Reckless Moment', 'Letter from an Unknown Woman', 'Le Plaisir' and 'Madame De...'. I think, as well, that there might be more on the way...

I was kinda hoping we get the two Kurosawa re-issues in December.

I have both DERSU UZALA (1975) and DODES KA DEN (1970) on the Criterion laserdisc and both would be worth getting the Criterion treatment especially DERSU since it was shot in 70mm and all the versions out there are in bad shape! There has been talk of Criterion releasing DODES KA DEN but nothing yet so far.

I have just posted some thoughts in the International DVD News section about a possible alternative.

Hey, let's talk about those Saul Turell documentaries included in the Janus Films box. I seriously doubt any of them could warrant an individual spine number (and if they did, we'd all scream bloody nepotism). The one I'm most curious about is Paul Robeson: Portrait of an Artist. Criterion released Show Boat on laserdisc and Universal hasn't put out a DVD yet, so I could definitely see this as a potential release and supplement combo. What about the others?

Image released The Emperor Jones on DVD, but with the merger, I guess CC could do an upgraded version with some extras. (It's not an entirely satisfactory movie, but it's an extremely interesting adaptation and gives Robeson one of his all-around juciest screen roles.)

I guess CC could also release one of the two British films he made: Sanders of the River and King Solomon's Mines. (I believe Sanders was one of Korda's London Film productions, and a couple of those have made their way into the collection.)

I just need to get out my frustrations and say: "Where the hell is 'The Milky Way'?" I thought it was going to be released along with "The Phantom Of Liberty", over a year ago, but there's still no sign of it. I'm sure it's bound to come out at some point, but it's one of my favorite Buñuel films, and I want it now.

If you're that impatient, buy the UK disc, or rent it from Nicheflix, if they still have it (that's what I did).

It's quite possible that new prints of other Bunuels changed the queue order -- say Viridiana and possibly Exterminating Angel. Personally I'm waiting for Tristana.

yeah I made a post about it being OOP on Fox Lorber almost a year ago, great movie that deserves all the viewers it can reach.

I just hope to God they include the action figures!

went to hear jean pierre gorin speak tonight, along with a showing of _poto & cabengo_.

he said that criterion is releasing his trilogy (P&C, Ordinary Pleasures, My Crasy Life) in the near future. he added that this was going to be called "three popular films" or something of the sort, though he said this with a chuckle.

anyway, he had hinted at this when he spoke at telluride, but he was more more definitive tonight.
