The 4K restoration of Nights of Cabiria looks fantastic in this trailer for the upcoming screening at Film Forum. Japanese Blu-Ray was utter garbage to be honest, so I'm super excited for this. Criterion will use the same master, right?

Hopefully, it's all of them, although I don't know the particulars regarding licensing. If Criterion was able to fit nearly forty features into the Bergman box set, it should be able to accommodate the twenty or so features that are considered part of Fellini's directorial canon. Again, licensing could be the one factor preventing this approach.

Nov/Dec is a good bet for the Fellini, considering it should be prime baby boomer (and others, but they have money) Christmas gift fodder. It's always possible that it gets delayed because a restoration that isn't finished on time (possibly aggravated by coronavirus), but considering it's his centennial, I expect they'll do their best to get it out (and would anyone be that upset if it didn't include a new restoration of Variety Lights?).

As for films, Bergman had the advantage of most of his work being under a single rights holder. The Fellini films are more split up; I expect that we'll get everything that Criterion has previously released, plus Il Bidone and Toby Dammit (either alone or with Spirits of the Dead), which are both up on the Criterion Channel. They seem to have worked out something with Studio Canal, so that'll include White Sheik, Nights of Cabiria, and Variety Lights. But I have no idea who controls most of the post-Amarcord work in the US (Clowns, Casanova, City of Women, Ginger and Fred, Orchestra Rehearsal, Intervista, Voice of the Moon).

Unless the pre-existing BD titles get a noticeable upgrade in the box set, I'll probably settle for individual titles too: The White Sheik, I Vitelloni, and I'm hoping Nights of Cabiria if it isn't the horrendous master used for the Studio Canal BD.

If this set ends up being mostly comprehensive, I imagine it will be priced at a $199.99 MSRP, making it preferable to the standalone option as long as you want at least 5 of the titles. As for me, I've already half-financed this thing by selling off my OOP Nights of Cabiria DVD

If I didn't already own La Dolce Vita, Amarcord, and 8 1/2 I'd jump on it. But yeah, if it includes everything, it'll be worth having a few of those other 50s works for rare occasions

Thanks for the detective work. I'd erroneously thought the Arrows were UK only. That means probably none of the first group (and probably not Love in the City [with Raro] or Boccaccio 70 [with Kino], though Criterion might cut a deal to get only the Fellini segments). But the second group might be maybe?

I'm quite fond of Casanova and I cannot imagine Universal saying no to Criterion. It's a really beautiful film. I can't wait for more people to see it.

I expect seeing as they seem to have played along with The Serpent’s Egg last year that the two Arrow titles will also find their way into Criterion’s set. Not sure that Kino or Cohen would play so nice.

It's up to Raro for CLOWNS, not Kino since they only distribute. They had a relationship with Criterion at one point as they licensed IL GENERALE DELLA ROVERE (through Minerva Pictures) to them, but their own release made Criterion go OOP.

Let's hope so. If any of the labels also have Bergman's Prison (The Devil's Wanton), then things might be tricky, as that is a glaring omission in that wonderful box set, and one Criterion would have exhausted all efforts to include.
