The Non-Criterion Boutique Label Battle Royale: There Can Only Be (202)1

#1 Post by swo17 » Thu Dec 30, 2021 5:21 am

RESULTS!

Only the items listed below are eligible for each category. I've listed the minimum number of items that you must vote for in each category, but feel free to vote for as many as you want as runners-up (in order of preference). This will presumably be fun for other people to read, and may help me to determine a winner in the event of a tie.

ROUND 1 FOR NOMINATIONS ENDS MARCH 15. ROUND 2 FOR VOTING PROPER WILL RUN THROUGH THE END OF MARCH.

While we're still waiting for All Our Haunts to arrive, let's gradually kick off this year's voting by starting the nomination process. Anything that is both nominated and seconded through the end of January will be eligible for the final ballot. Depending on what is nominated, I will create additional categories at that time (best boxset, best label, best release by label, etc.). In this first post I will keep a running tally of everything that has been made eligible for the final ballot by being both nominated and seconded. If you already see it here, then there is no need to mention it again until final voting starts.

The idea behind having a whole month for each round is to give people time to make thoughtful recommendations about worthwhile releases and extras, and to give other people time to check out those recommendations.

IN LIMBO
Has nominations as both Best Overall Release and Best Format Upgrade--won't be eligible unless 2+ people agree on a category

There was a McBride commentary on Kino's Straight Shooting blu from last year. Is the MoC one different?

Also want to qualify that, as hideous as that DoD artwork is, at least its lenticular slipcase gives you the tactile pleasure of zipzipzipping your fingernails across it.

True. And I think you're right that the McBride commentary is not new, so I've removed that nomination

I’ll have a thought for some other titles, but I definitely want to be here to second Silver Screams Cinema, the first (and possibly only?) Imprint release that feels in any way essential. Not that the seven films therein are in any way particularly remarkable, but simply rescuing these mostly unreleased on Blu (Olive did two I think?) titles from the Republic vault and linking them together paints a great picture of a piece of the history of that studio that I was not really cognizant of before.

Isn’t Days a 2022 release?
The limited edition isn't even out yet so I don't know how/why someone would nominate it for 2021.

I forgot Sátántangó had been released right at the start of 2021--seconded!

almost everything I would nominate has been covered
You should second the ones you agree with (that haven't already been seconded and listed in the first post of this thread) so they can be eligible for the final vote.

Yes, it is.

Also, What's Up Doc? and The Man Who Would Be King weren't new releases--they just put them back in print

I imagine these count for 2021, since they were released just before the new year direct from VG's site, even though the street date is listed as Jan. elsewhere?
Yes.

BEST LATE DISCOVERY
Gamera The Heisei Era (Arrow)
Shohei Imamura Set (Arrow)
Glad you were able to catch up to these releases, but they were eligible and awarded last year, so aren't eligible for this category

Ah sorry, I had forgotten that they were already honored last year. I can't think of anything else I got that would be eligible for Late Discovery so I'll remove that from my OP.

I’ll second The Dungeon of Andy Milligan and The Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee. Severin has gone in the last two years as a label I was only interested in a handful of titles from, to one that is must-watch for their announcements every month.

TWBB and swo, Bedtime Story never had a legal physical release, so it’s actually not a format upgrade. But assuming you’d vote for it for best general release, I second/third it

I second bonus film India: Matri Bhumi (BFI) and overall release Straight Shooting / Hell Bent (Eureka)

BEST LATE DISCOVERY

First Name: Carmen (KL, 2019)
Mo' Better Blues (KL, 2020)
The Revenge of Frankenstein (Indicator) was quite a revelation. It was in Hammer Volume IV in 2019, but released individually in 2021, so perhaps it doesn't qualify anywhere

I'd also like to nominate Thunderbolt for best release and David Kalat on What Happened to Jones? for best commentary

So many of the discs I wanted to nominate turn out to come from previous years, some going as far back as 2016––which shows you how many new blu rays I bought this year. The numbers have gone way, way down.

Best Overall Release

Suzhou River (Welcome Music)
Tokyo Heaven (Bandai Visual)
Wild Search (Eureka)
I Am Cuba (Potemkine)

...and I'll second

Shawscope Volume I (Arrow)
Sailor Suit & Machine Gun (Arrow)

Best Format Upgrade

Tokyo Heaven (Bandai Visual)
L'Amour Braque (KL Studio Classics)

...and I'll second

Some Came Running (Warner Archive)

I've hardly listened to any new audio commentaries, but my nomination for Best Audio Commentary this year is

Kat Ellinger (L'Amour Braque, KL Studio Classics)

Best Packaging

Shawscope Volume I (seconding the nomination)

For fun, here's my list of
Discs I Thought Were Released This Year, and Wanted to Nominate, But It Turns Out I Only Bought Them This Year, and They're Too Old To Qualify

Flip Flappers (Sentai Filmworks)
The Elo Havetta Collection (Slovak Film Institute)
Bend of the River (Explosive Media)
Giant Robo: The Animation (Diskotek)
L'important C'est D'aimer... (Film Movement)

And here's a list of
Films I Thought Were On Blu Ray When I Was Making These Lists But It Was Only In My Imagination

I, The Executioner
Black God, White Devil
Luminous Woman
She Ra and the Princesses of Power
The Eyes, The Mouth
Matalo!
The Golden Boat
The Travelling Players
The 13 Steps of Maki: The Young Aristocrats

My list of
Most Anticipated Releases of 2022

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Sentai Filmworks)

And another, my list called
Another Year, and Still No Blu Ray

The Mission
Magic Hunter
The Blade
It's Now or Never
Typhoon Club
P.P. Rider
Eureka (2000)
Goyokin
Whispering Corridors II: Memento Mori
Bound for the Fields, The Mountains, and the Seacoast
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
The Valiant Ones
Pedicab Driver
Flaming Ears
Nomad
Green Snake
Angel Dust
The Mattei Affair
Together Brothers
The Travelling Players
Capone Cries Hard
Mr. T and the T-Force

And, while I'm at it, going crazy tonight, here's my list of
Blu Rays That Need A Redo in 2022 (because the quality is lacking)
Incredibly, 4 of these came out just this previous year.

Swallowtail Butterfly
Bitter Victory
Final VIctory
Illustrious Corpses
La Guerre est Finie
Children of Paradise
The Cherry Orchard
Lost Chapter: Passion in Snow
The Fun, The Luck & the Tycoon
