Re: UHD and HDR in General
Is it still with Paramount? The rights may have reverted back to the director who, appealing to a mostly young and tech savvy but ephemeral leaning fan base, smartly figured this was the best way to profit from it and those buying it prob wouldn't buy a Blu-ray. If it is with a studio, I'm sure we'll see it on disc before too long though

I think But I'm a Cheerleader is with Lionsgate. Who, of course, gave The Limey the same treatment.

Well this will clearly by Criterion's first UHD then, shortly after they strike a deal with Lionsgate to release the newer scan of Velvet Goldmine in the US.

Generally speaking, if the UHD is released by Universal or Lionsgate, the UHD will have all of the extra features as the Blu (with exceptions, like the UHD releases of the Evil Dead movies). Other studios tend to include nothing but the commentary track(s) on the UHD, and sometimes not even then (like WB's release of The Goonies).

Is 3D possible with UHD? I see some UHD titles that are bundled with 3D BR, but don’t appear to offer 3D with 4K.

I haven't seen a 3D UHD to date. Then again, they stopped manufacturing 3D TVs years ago, so it's kind of a moot point.denti alligator wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 2:01 pmIs 3D possible with UHD? I see some UHD titles that are bundled with 3D BR, but don’t appear to offer 3D with 4K.

Not 3D projectors. Very common.Monterey Jack wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 10:36 pmI haven't seen a 3D UHD to date. I don't know if 3D is in the UHD spec. I'm not aware of any 3D UHD discs, and I'm only aware of one film with a combo pack that includes both a UHD and a 3D Blu-ray: Alita: Battle Angel

It is not possible in the UHD spec, and that is a big reason why 4k TVs don’t have very much 3D support.
I believe the only other movies that came with 4K + 3D were Ghostbusters and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, in the US anyway.

In the US at least, there are also Passengers, Angry Birds, and a few steelbooks like Pacific Rim Uprising and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
In France, there are also Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, Justice League, Spiderman Homecoming, Blade Runner 2049, Valerian, Rampage, Ready Player One, How to Train your Dragon 1 and 2, The Meg, Aquaman and a few others.

I believe the Dredd (2012) 4K UHD also has the 3D option on the included BD since Lionsgate only made a single Blu-ray for both the 2D and 3D releases.

Coming to Blu-ray from Lionsgatesenseabove wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 2:04 pmJust found out that But I'm a Cheerleader got a digital-only 4k UHD release—with new extras, including a director's commentary, that are only available when purchased via AppleTV. I can't decide if it's weirder that this got a 4k UHD scan at all or that it didn't get any physical release, not even a blu-ray, but I hope digital-only releases with platform-specific extras isn't a trend that catches on...

A 4k UHD restoration on a BD-R with a slipcover. Excellent priorities, there. *sigh* Looks like it's getting a pressed disc in the UK, at least...

So Lionsgate both burned and pressed discs for this, it's apparently a crapshoot which you get, at least when ordering from Amazon, and it seems it's even a crapshoot whether you get the disc type that corresponds to the logo-bearing/logo-free case the disc arrives in.senseabove wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 5:58 pmA 4k UHD restoration on a BD-R with a slipcover. Just received my copy of But I'm a Cheerleader. It's a pressed disc. Seems as though only a very small run was burned before the decision to switch to pressing.
But to return the thread to its original theme, it seems disconcerting that Lionsgate is releasing so few UHDs lately, particularly from their Studiocanal deal.

I wanted to consult here about this rather than the blu ray forums but I think I'm about ready to upgrade to a region free UHD player so... what would be the best affordable option? I'm not even sure the typical price for one but let's budget between $100-200. Samsung doesn't make region free uhd players do they? I also do not want LG at all. Not sure if that puts severe limitations on my options or not.

Re: UHD and HDR in General
AFAIK, 4K UHD disks are generally region-free by default. I’m assuming you mean 4K UHD players with region-switching capability for HD Blu-ray disks. If that’s the case, I’d recommend checking Bombay Electronics as they offer a range of post-market modded players. I just opted for the Panasonic UB820, but the UB420 is very well-reviewed at about half the price — although it’s still almost double your top-end.

Yeah, UHD is a region free format, so all discs will work with all players worldwide.
They will still be locked to the native BD region though. If you already have a region free BD player you'd maybe be better off keeping it and just buying a normal UHD player to use solely for UHDs.

Re: UHD and HDR in General
I knew uhd's were already region free but I wsn't too clear with my original post. But EddieLarkin you seriously gave the best advice I didn't even think about
I'm finding myself wanting to buy more region locked international releases so actually it would turn out the best option would be to jsut get a region free BD player and have that and my uhd player since I didn't need to upgrade but just was wanting to and Deprong to give you credit as well thank you for clarifying about the region switching.
So while I'm here a good region free BD player can be bought for relatively cheap these days? Samsung or Sony or Panasonic if any or all three of them make those.

Re: UHD and HDR in General
Out of curiosity, what has been your complaint about LG players? I’ve had a region-free modded LG BP620 as my player for the past seven years and it has worked reliably the whole time. I’m only retiring it because I wanted to add UHD playback. It still works just fine.black&huge wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 3:49 pmI also do not want LG at all. Any ideas which "AI upscaled with fake grain and fake HDR" release James Flower (of Arrow Video) is referring to?
Nordic release of Djano, perhaps? Haven't seen it, just a random guess based on Arrow themselves just releasing it.
