Personally this is one of my all-time favourite Australian films, right up there with Picnic At Hanging Rock. Perhaps some will disagree but in my eyes it's also one of the greatest Westerns made since McCabe & Mrs Miller and The Wild Bunch. Miles ahead of the marginally overrated Unforgiven.
I had pretty much lost faith in our cinematic output over the years but fuck if watching The Proposition for the first time last year wasn't a proud day to be Australian. Pity the majority of critics here were too busy fussing over the decent but far from great Little Fish and Look Both Ways because they let a masterpiece slip right out from under them.
