Moderators: It might be a good time to split off the Zwigoff/Crumb discussions into another thread.

Crumb will at least design the package if they're working on it.

Re: Criterion Newsletter (Part 2)
There is also a 5-disc French set, which contains in addition to the Lang film(s) the 1938 Richard Eichberg version (also two films), and I find the Eichberg version much superior to the Lang, and it's only available in the French set. The shortcoming seems to be that the subs are non-removable, though a simple re-burn might help that.RobertAltman wrote:Yesterday I came across the OOP Fantoma set in a store here in Norway for about $35. Is this set worth picking up, or can we expect a (better) re-release in the near future?

Re. the Fantoma - it's a phenomenal transfer - one of the best SD renderings of a film from that period. Don't know if the French disc is from the same source. (And I'm not sure if this is a plus or a minus, but I should add the disclaimer that I find the film(s) completely mediocre and the adoration for them inexplicable - and I still love the way they look in that set.)

I just imdb'd "Red Lion" and came back with Akage, starring Toshiro Mifune. I spent a couple of minutes trying to get excited about it and failed.
Thin Red Line makes WAY more sense.

Not very cool to torture animals like that just for the sake of a clue.

Great as this is, does this nix the potential of a Badlands CC? I was under the impression there was only one Malick film in the pipeline...

Re: Criterion Newsletter (Part 2)
I wonder how long they've been working on this? Ever since late last fall, after the November and December titles were announced, leaving a lot of people disappointed, they've only been inserting newsletter clues for discs two or three months down the line.
Edit: Announcement-wise, that is.

I haven't seen this film in 10 years, can someone remind me why a red lion is significant to pointing to this film?

Any chance it's a double clue involving Errol Morris? It was an IFC title.

Lol, I was thinking Okamoto's Red Lion... but that would be too obvious. Good one Criterion.

Pedro Costa's top ten list is probably the best one to date.

What started as homage slipped too closely into mimicry of Jean-Pierre Gorin's list.Napier wrote:Pedro Costa's top ten list is probably the best one to date.

Have we completely ruled out Kurosawa's rarely seen Emaciated Lion with a High Fever Who Feels the Colors of the Wind and Also Was Just Dipped in a Vat of Red Paint? It is Kurosawa month, after all.dadaistnun wrote:

I think everybody is way off mark here... I think it's clear that the clue refers to Red Desert on Blu.

It's obvious that the lion is in a desert, look at the background! More than that he's hungry. Only problem, the desert is white. So I think it's White Desert !
