Thanks for this. I just listened to it and can rep for its value. Cronin seemed like a friendly and sweet guy and––like Stern posits––still hung up on JLH a little. The Pearlman stories are just straight-up insane. I never knew anything about the guy (not being an LFO devotee), but the details of his life and death are pretty heartbreaking.

Absolutely fascinating. A pity about his work, but a fascinating story. I have to read those imdb reviews now.

Fascinating but also a selfish prick of a jerk (!). If you're going to kill yourself have the decency to do it where you're not going to hurt other people. This guy started a fire in an apartment full of flammable papers for God's sake. Forget for a moment he didn't think enough of his written works to kill himself somewhere else so those papers would be preserved (had he totally succeeded there wouldn't have been a scrap left for anyone to read), he didn't care about the well-being of others (or their belongings) if this fire would have gotten out of control and burned the entire building, the building next door or if it had spread a couple of blocks in either direction. I pity the bastard, but as a person he was selfish in the extreme when he didn't think that burning his place (and himself with it) could have endangered those around him.

Addenda -- he was a regular in Naruse's post-war films -- often appearing in key supporting roles and occasionally as a lead. He also showed up in some films of Ozu, Kurosawa and Ichikawa. Finally, he provided the memorable voice of the antique store owner (and grandfather of the young lead) in Takahata's Only Yesterday. A sad loss.
