I’m not sure about software for DCP playback without the key. I could only the fear from Hollywood studios if the encryption was cracked and films could just be uploaded online. I also don’t believe DCPs are standard playback of a single compressed video file and actually have multiple components to them. I have made my own DCPs to play on cinema projectors, but never have got one to play back on a computer.Never Cursed wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 7:44 pmWell those are certainly some obstacles! I thought there were some types of DCP software that could run natively on Windows, though, would those not work around at least the OS issues?

A wonderful film. I guess Olive lost the rights?

Great news! I came close to buying that Olive release multiple times and now will await patiently for the Criterion. I have to echo Domino and say it’s excellent.

Re: Janus Films
Great news indeed. Hopefully they pull together the rich special edition this film deserves. Smooth Talk is exceptional.

Re: Janus Films
I've seen the new 4k restoration a few days ago and while it definitely looks like a recent work, I can't say I was convinced by its smooth aspect.
I also quite disliked the movie, which I find was spending a lot of energy frustrating and keeping at distance the viewer, in an almost punishing manner.

I mean getting a good quality release of something by Hou Hsiao-Hsien is good right? I long for a better release of A City of Sadness.

I'm quite sure this will be a major upgrade over whatever was the previous video release (if any) of the movie. But still, it seemed noticeably DNRed.

Loved The Boys from Fengkuei, quite liked Green Green Grass of Home, got bored by Cute Girl, hated The Assassin.

Re: Janus Films
Did you watch the Taiwan blu-ray? I have it and it has poor encoding with tons of banding. Criterion will absolutely do a much better job with it and likely (hopefully) not utilize DNR.

No, I've seen the 4k restoration in theaters (so DCP).

Re: Janus Films
I remember it being dimly lit & a bit hazy when I saw it in the 90s at the PFA. From the look, I assumed it was shot on (90s) digital. I loved it & picked up the US dvd when it came out, but felt the severity of the letterboxing really diminished the film's impact. Its been one of several titles on my Criterion wishlist of 90s letterboxed dvds (along with L'Humanite, Beau Travail, For Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train, Indochine, Father and Son, & Raise The Red Lantern). So here's hoping.

Re: Janus Films
It's very much 35mm (and in fact Hou is yet to make a feature on anything else). The dimness and haziness is by design; Lee Ping-bing has told of being directed by Hou to turn the lights down until Lee warned him that anything lower would risk nothing registering on the film, at which point Hou would focus on something else for a few minutes before going back to Lee and directing him to turn the lights down again.

Re: Janus Films
The poster for Smooth Talk, which will surely be the Criterion cover:
And the description:
And the description:
Janus Films wrote:Suspended between carefree youth and the harsh realities of the adult world, a teenage girl experiences an unsettling awakening in this haunting vision of innocence lost. Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ celebrated short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” and produced for PBS’ American Playhouse, the narrative debut from director Joyce Chopra features a revelatory breakout performance from Laura Dern as Connie, the fifteen-year-old black sheep of her family whose summertime idyll of beach trips, mall hangouts, and innocent flirtations is shattered by an encounter with a mysterious stranger (a memorably menacing Treat Williams). Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Smooth Talk captures the thrill and terror of adolescent sexual exploration as it transforms the ingredients of a standard coming of age portrait into something altogether more troubling and profound.
