Re: Passages
Absolutely terrible news. Not only was he one of the finest character actors in Japanese cinema to play the villain type, but in films like The Human Condition and in practically every Nagisa Oshima film, he showed was a true talent he was. I've always felt he was among the most underrated of Japanese actors in the sixties. Hopefully, the upcoming Oshima from Criterion will show off what a great actor he was to those who don't know about him very well.Rufus T. Firefly wrote:Kei Sato

I was shocked that they forgot to mention his role in Onibaba. The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote:Absolutely terrible news. Re: Passages
Very sad news, Oshima used the same group of actors again and again, Sato perhaps was used most interestingly, he always had this knowing look... I always felt each character he played was somehow connected to his other films. Look forward to the Oshima set even more!

Callie Angell, the absolute authority on Warhol's films. A terrible loss.

The NY Times obituary says her father told the Times she killed herself. That's terrible.

Re: Passages
Rosa Rio, organist for silent movies and network radio shows, at 107. Great anecdote:
Radio of the period was a rough-and-tumble world — a man’s world. Miss Rio gave as good as she got.
As recounted in Leonard Maltin’s book “The Great American Broadcast: A Celebration of Radio’s Golden Age†(Dutton, 1997), she was playing a show at NBC one day when the announcer, Dorian St. George, crept up behind her, undid the buttons down the back of her blouse and unhooked her bra. Miss Rio, performing live before a gallery of visitors, could do nothing but play on.
When the music stopped, Mr. St. George stepped up to the microphone to do a commercial. As he intoned plummily with the gallery looking on, Miss Rio stole up behind him, unbuckled his belt, unzipped his fly and neatly dropped his trousers. Then, according to Mr. Maltin’s book, she started on his undershorts.
What happened next is unrecorded.

My ancient Video yesteryear VHS of Grune's Die Strasse has a Rosa Rio organ score (which I love).
