Here is a list of titles expected to be forthcoming from Criterion according to various forms of communication through announcements, including newsletters, emails, blogs, websites, social networks, and non-official sources with valuable creditability. Please see Criterion's own site for titles already announced, but not yet released.

Criterion announces new titles at their website, http://www.criterion.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on the 15th of every month, unless that date falls on a weekend, holiday, or there is just a delay.

Even if a film is listed below, this list is not an indicator that the film will be announced immediately. Criterion releases are often held up by a multitude of factors: restorations, director approval, supplements, cover art, etc. Expecting or demanding that a certain film be announced at a certain time is a fruitless endeavor. It is better to wait and enjoy the titles that have been announced, so that the film you are hoping for can receive the best edition possible. You should not see this list as 100% confirmation of anything, as things can and do change, even when a film has already been announced officially (see Contempt + Ran blu-rays).

This forthcoming list is grouped by the source of information. Generally, the list trends downwards (separated by "-------") in terms of strength of information source and immediacy / expectation of announcement.

Are there plans to release Too Much Johnson or Immortal Story in the U.S.?

Immortal Story rights are with Criterion. We hope to have a U.S deal in place by the end of the year for Too Much Johnson.

The Immortal Story has been a Janus title for awhile (maybe always? Who was the original U.S. distributor?). Neither Criterion nor any other U.S. video outfit has ever released it on physical media, but it's been on Criterion's Hulu Plus channel for a few years. Hopefully whatever has kept it off of U.S. video has finally been sorted out.

I feel like it makes more sense as a supplement, given its runtime. Hopefully its included on a release of Chimes or Othello.

Based on that link, the HD source for The Immortal Story will only be worked on this summer by Gaumont, so hopefully they don't screw it up and Criterion can use it.

There is a little Fassbinder retrospective going on over here, and I just saw which movies were shown on 35mm and which on DCP.
Now, given this is germany over here, I doubt they'd supply a "DVD"-DCP-Version. Thus, I conclude that every DCP of those are new HD masters which may or may not be released via Criterion:

I wrote in the New Year's Drawing thread as well that it could be Miklos Jancso's The Round-Up, especially since the new 2k restoration of the film was shown this year at Cannes as part of the Cannes Classics screenings. I don't know anything about distribution rights though, so don't know how much of that could actually be a possibility.

A new 4K restoration of Pickup On South Street plays at the NY Film Forum for a week. I think we can expect an upgrade to follow over the next 6 months or so.

Masters of Cinema have confirmed (at least to me on Twitter) that their disc is from said restoration.

Is there any reason to assume Clouds of Sils Maria won't end up in the collection? I haven't noticed a release mentioned anywhere else, and I was wondering if Criterion posting Olivier Assayas' Top Ten may indicate an announcement in the near future?

It's coming out from Paramount. That doesn't mean it might not also later come out from Criterion though.

I agree with the poster above. I wouldn't rule out a release of Clouds of Sils Maria at a later date. Given the fact that Boyhood was released by Paramount, but has been confirmed for a Criterion special edition at a later date, I would say that Criterion has a decent relationship with the company.

Criterion producer Issa Clubb is appearing on a panel tomorrow at the Welles symposium currently going on at the University of Michigan, and his bio in the list of notables attending states that Othello, Chimes at Midnight, and Immortal Story will all be forthcoming from Criterion this year. Not sure where whoever compiled the bios got the info, but there it is, for what it's worth.

Regarding Forest of the Hanged...

I'm at this University of Michigan event. Clubb's bio says Chimes, Othello, and Immortal Story are slated for release "within the next year." Rosenbaum just interviewed Clubb. Clubb confirmed they are working on all three. He said they are still looking for source materials for Chimes. He said something about Othello still involving a fair amount of work. So all 3 clearly happening, but I would not assume any will come out this year.

If Othello still needs a lot of work, hopefully that means they are restoring one of the Welles' cuts, since the Beatrice version from 1992 was just fully restored and should be good to go. Also seems to indicate they won't be using the Spanish restoration of Chimes that played Film Forum and that Bongo are releasing.

Thanks for looking into that! I was very confused as to why this was the only WCP film that was on the old website, but not the new one (I'll put a note next to it on my forthcoming list). Glad they are still planning to work on it. Some of these films seem like never-ending restorations or projects. Like a Brighter Summer Day seems like it should all be signed/sealed/delivered as it was restored by them, but it seems like further restoration/rights issues keep coming up.

Speaking of which: The news on the Welles delays makes it sound like Criterion will hopefully be considering that Distribpix/porno company's apparent "pristine print."

Another thought came to me recently - as to why certain films haven't been licensed from MGM (Bergman, Truffaut, etc): Perhaps MGM might be losing the rights to some of these films in the near future - thus Criterion would be more likely to wait and then purchase the rights, rather than license them for a short period (say, 3 years). MGM has been steadily losing rights to films - Persona, silent Htichcock titles, etc - thus perhaps this explains why we haven't seen more of that Bergman box come out (+ why some of the Truffaut titles ended up at TT).

Yes - Clubb indicated there would be another version of Othello included (I think we already knew that from Wellesnet, but now we have heard it from the disc producer). Rosenbaum mentioned some version that has turned up in Italy (?), but Clubb did not seem to know anything about it.

And, yes, it did seem from his answer that they will not be using the Spanish restoration of Chimes - or at least they are looking into various possibilities. Anyway, he was not specific.

It sounded like Immortal Story was pretty far along, but they are going to sit on it so they can release it at the same time as Chimes.

Someone asked Clubb about what special features might be included on the discs, but he did not respond with any specifics.

Clubb said that they would eventually upgrade Arkadin to blu, but they are not working on that currently.

Rosenbaum asked whether we might see an edition of Ambersons from Criterion, and Clubb said that he had no idea whether that was possible.

Oh, and in terms of timing on Immortal Story, Chimes, and Othello, Clubb made some comment that they would miss the centennial, so I guess that means it is unlikely we will see any of them this year - but it sounds like they are aiming for 2016 (given the bio saying "within the next year").

Arkadin to blu sounds more like "we're eventually trying to upgrade all the films to blu-ray", and Ambersons is a real shame, but the rest is great news!

Yes, from the discussions re: Warner licenses on this site, I was thinking Ambersons might be a real possibility, but he pretty well threw cold water on that one.
