Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World (Radu Jude, 2023)

#1 Post by Never Cursed »

Locarno released their official selection today, among which are (I think) the first English-language details of the new Radu Jude. It's titled Do Not Expect Too Much of the End of the World, runs 163 minutes, and stars Nina Hoss.

Teaser trailer, which also reveals that I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians' Ioana Iacob and Uwe Boll will feature

Does anyone know what the rights situation is with Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World and whether we can expect a Blu-ray release somewhere down the track? I understand it's still making the rounds in some places theatrically but I'm a bit apprehensive given Bad Luck Banging didn't exactly get a widespread physical release.

As far as I know, Magnolia (who distributed Bad Luck Banging in the US) doesn't do a lot of Blu-Ray releases for their films (even relative international successes, such as Shoplifters and The Square, and it took Vinegar Syndrome for Censor to get a Blu-Ray release in America) especially since this is a lower-profile title. I believe MUBI (which similarly focuses on major hits) owns international rights to Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World but unless the film gains enough traction internationally, I doubt that it will see a physical release in the US.

Well, fingers crossed MUBI brings it out then as part of their DVD/Blu-ray line! Sad to think we might have gotten to a point where a new film can receive this much international acclaim – it's surely among the most discussed "arthouse" films of the year – and still be consigned to streaming.

Quite a savage and broad-ranging satire of gig work, post-2020 "we care" corporate marketing, the EU's treatment of Romania as a literal and figurative garbage dump, social media creators, and more, all with a solid Romanian New Wave style: a good third of the film consists of fixed-camera shots of Ilinca Manolache driving around Bucharest, listening to the radio and swearing at other drivers, and then concludes with two roughly 15-minute static shots of the filming of a segment of an increasingly ridiculous corporate safety video. It's not a terribly deep film—all its themes are right there on the surface—but well worth watching as a commentary on our times. To say Nina Hoss "stars," though, is misleading. She's in it for about 10 minutes total.

Lucian Bratu's Angela merge mai departe/Angela Moves On, the Romanian film quoted from at length in this film, has been subbed in English on backchannels

Finally picked up the French JHR Films DVD of this – nice to have it in some form if this is the only disc release the film gets, but unfortunately can confirm that the French subs are forced. (I don’t suppose anyone else with an Oppo player has a workaround for that?)

Only special feature on the disc is Jude’s short film The Potemkinists. Also comes with a French-language booklet primarily consisting of an interview with the director.
