How recommendations are built
The purpose of this tool is to help both new and seasoned cinephiles discover films in The Criterion Collection through their own cinematic interests while encouraging exploration beyond familiar favorites.
It uses the directors, films, genres, movements, and preferences you provide to build a starting point for your recommendations. At least one director is required; everything else helps refine the results.
From there, it explores connections across film history, including cinematic movements, shared styles and themes, influences, and other artistic relationships to identify releases from The Criterion Collection that fit your interests.
Finally, your Comfort Zone and other preference settings shape how closely the recommendations stay to your selections. Safer settings favor more familiar choices, while more adventurous settings encourage broader and less obvious suggestions.
Things worth knowing
- At least one director is required. All other fields are optional.
- Everything returned has a release from The Criterion Collection. Unless otherwise specified, this will include Out-of-Print titles.
- Selecting a director who is not represented in the Collection is fine, and often useful. The system can still find Criterion films connected through a filmmaker's style, themes, influences, and other relationships.
- Selecting a director who already has releases in the Collection does not guarantee their films will be recommended; the system assumes you are already familiar with their work and will consider a variety of other factors before making a selection.
- Comfort Zone settings influence the ranking and are not hard filters. A film will not be excluded simply because it falls above or below one criterion.
- Some recommendations will feel obvious while others are intended to nudge you toward films you may not have considered on your own but may be of interest to you.
- If a director is unavailable, it only means they have not yet been appropriately mapped in the system and their absence is not meant as any sort of slight. We are working on adding more, but you will also have an opportunity to suggest them while searching.
