I'm only sorry it wasn't Michael Medved. Now there's someone who deserves to die a long, slow, painful death from ass cancer.

Sorry I forgot to include his surname. It's Edward Yang who passed away. One of the greatest filmmakers we've had.

I'm absolutely devastated by the news of Edward Yang's death. I had no idea he was seriously ill. A very small output for a major filmmaker: seven films, a contribution to an omnibus film, and--according to IMDb--an animated film in development:

Guangyinde gushi / In Our Time (1982) (other segments directed by Yi Chang, I-Chen Ko, and Te-chen Tao)
Haitan de yitian / That Day, on the Beach (1984)
Qingmei Zhuma / Taipei Story (1985)
Kongbu fenzi / Terrorizer (1986)
Guling jie shaonian sha ren shijian / A Brighter Summer Day (1991)
Duli shidai / A Confucian Confusion (1994)
Mahjong (1996)
Yi yi / Yi yi: A One and a Two... (2000)
The Wind (2007) -- in development

Aside from Yi yi (a masterpiece, in my estimation), his films are tremendously difficult to see. I was only able to see A Brighter Summer Day (another masterpiece) and A Confucian Confusion on horribly blurry VCDs.

Perhaps the best we can hope for is that his premature death leads to proper DVD releases of his films, and the long-delayed recognition for this master . A tragic loss, indeed.

Awful, awful news. I had no idea he was battling cancer. So terribly saddened by this.

It is very sad, but it was pretty much an open secret that Edward Yang had been battling cancer for quite a few years. It is a shame that his movies never received the exposure they deserved.

What a shame, Yi Yi was one of my favorite discoveries last year and I was sad to find out that most of his other work is impossible to find.

Sad news indeed. I remember seeing Yi Yi in the theatre and being overwhelmed by its closing minutes and realizing I truly had seen something remarkable. I have yet to see his other works, but I hope they find their way to DVD soon.

He has been struggling with both the budget for THE WIND and also his cancer for the last few years...he moved to Beverly Hills to get better medical treatment. Alas it did not manage to save him... And to think that just a year ago he seemed to be doing better and starting to get financing underway.

We'll miss you Edward.

I was just about to post the same thing. It is a truly tragic loss for Yang to pass away so young. Hopefully Yang will receive greater recognition for his work if at least posthumously, something he should have enjoyed while he was alive.

Sokurov also is not doing very well these days...he did not show up to his own premiere for ALEXANDRA. He is supposedly very ill and is already going blind... I hope that he will pull through OK.

Boots Randolph, the guy who created this music, has died. I wonder if they'll play it at his funeral.

For a Harryhausen fan, that's sad news indeed. Matthews was, by far, the most convincing actor who battled Ray's critters.

Also, according to the NYT, gay as an Easter bonnet. It's becoming quite fashionable these days to be outed by one's partner after death.
