Another reason not to undercut Amazon or B&N: selling through these retailers (and maintaining a good relationship with them) gives Criterion a way to reach consumers who don't really know they exist (undoubtedly the vast majority of even dvd-purchasing consumers) and who go to Amazon or B&N to buy all kinds of stuff, including dvds & blus, where they may stumble on Criterion product. While Criterion may have 50,000+ fans on Facebook, I imagine that millions of people do business with Amazon and B&N, and regularly picking up just a few of them probably makes a meaningful difference to Criterion's bottom line over the long term.

Why weren't you able to order before? To be fair, Criterion did offer the discount for multiple case orders for well over a year.

I didn't realize just how substantial this price jump was though. You are correct that with shipping and the lack of discount, the cost for any given number of cases is more than double now what it was under the old structure*.

Can't speak for BAMJoe, but I've been having bizarre troubles with PayPal. It doesn't seem to like check cards. Of the two cases I ordered, I wound up having to send a money order for one and add somebody else's credit card for the other. I have one more to replace, and if I have to pay a couple extra dollars for some freaking sanity, so be it.

Sounds like it's just for the movies themselves, not other merchandise like empty cases

For those ordering the replacement cases through Criterion's store front...

A word to the wise... I just received the two replacement cases that I'm going to be mailing out to Finch, and the cases now have a barcode sticker on the outside of the case, which covers up the barcode on the cover insert. I'm not sure how difficult these stickers may, or may not, be able to remove so you might wanna keep some Goo-Gone on-hand just in-case.

Actually, to be exact, the additional cost now per replacement case (x) depends on how many cases you order, and whether or not you add enough to your order to qualify for free shipping:

1-2 cases, order > $50: no additional cost
3+ cases, order > $50: additional cost = 2.5x - 5
1-2 cases, order < $50: additional cost = 5.95 (just the cost of shipping)
3+ cases, order < $50: additional cost = 2.5x + .95

And you guys thought my math posts served no practical purpose...

Just got one of the $50 dollar gift cards(damn I've spent that much on their site)and figure I'll get a pre-order and a lower tier title but can't decide on the lower tier. I'm primarily swaying between Sword of the Beast and Story of a Prostitute, but any suggestions would be fine.

For Japanese stuff, you might find The Pornographers, Double Suicide, Fighting Elegy or Sword of Doom interesting. Other non-Japanese films I'd recommend are The Browning Version, the two Ermanno Olmi films and the three by Rene Clair.

I think if I were going to pick something up from the Criterion store, I'd get Essential Art House IV- it's got three of the EAH only releases, Mayerling, Le Jour se Leve, and Gervaise, and you could easily unload the other three in there on Amazon to make up the difference between the $50 gift card and the $75 price tag.

I forgot about the Imamura which is the only one of his Crits I still don't have. Does it come with a booklet, the site doesn't reference that.

Not really a booklet, it is one of those fold out leaflets with four of the sides reprinting James Hoberman's Village Voice essay from 1987 on the film. The other four sides contain the title page, chapter page, cast and credits, and about this disc/transfer/special thanks details.
