Guys, this is how we speculate on announcement day. On newsletter day, I want to see predictions of:

-what animal will appear
-how cute the animal will be
-if it will be saying something clever
-if it will signify the ever elusive triple clue???
-how many joke posts people will make after it has already been established with certainty what the clue represents

It will undoubtedly be an animal that looks the same upside down as right side up

The Phantom Carriage. Not a huge shock since it's posted on Hulu, but I'm grateful to see Criterion coming out with another silent.

This is shaping up to be a tremendous year for silents on Criterion.

Also zedz's boy João Pedro Rodrigues submitted a top 10 list...

I think they'll release this one the same month as Wild Strawberries for a lil bit of extra publicity for the silent.

Now if only Warners got that stick out of their ass and licensed The Wind all would be good in the world of Sjostrom.

I wonder if there's any release in the works? I think Two Drifters already has a US release, and if Strand's handling To Die Like a Man, you'd expect them to handle the DVD release too.

What? You mean that old guy in Wild Strawberries made movies?

Maybe they just befriended him through the Costa release. Seems like the most logical conclusion.

I've always thought that Wild Strawberries was a very nice homage to Phantom Carriage, what with the flashback structure and creepy opening dream sequence!

We also still need a non-Archive release of He Who Gets Slapped and a re-timed Outlaw and His Wife (which would require either a new score or the present score re-recorded at a slower tempo).

Technically we also need The Scarlet Letter, but I figure one step at a time.
Does anyone think that the outburst of all of these silents signifies an unexpected success of either Modern Times or more likely (and hopefully) the von Sternberg package? Either way something has seemed to renew their faith in the selling ability of silents.

my girlfriend laughed at me when I went on a three minute rant about the Scarlett Letter not being on DVD when Easy A asked the question of why people don't watch the old version. :-p I do think the Sternberg set sold well, hence we're getting more silents.

It's times like these that I'm especially glad that Criterion's moved to an all Blu-ray policy for their main line- knowing this was coming would be good regardless, but knowing that it's coming on Blu means that there's no real question that it will better what's already out there.

inevitably it will be wrong, deliberately wrong, just to make criterion forum members mad; it will be yet more evidence that criterion is stupid, hates cinema, loathes cineastes, and drowns puppies.
