I might have to get The Most Dangerous Game, it looks to be very interesting. I'm eagerly anticipating Flicker Alley's upcoming Albatros set though, that will surely be a contender for Blu-Ray of the year.

Guess that's one less early catalog title criterion will need to upgrade in The Most Dangerous Game, which is just fine by me - spread the wealth around.

Looks like it's the "Smilebox" versions of the Cinerama films, which is the way to go, though it would be nice to have a letterboxed version, too.

Well I tweeted Flicker Alley asking "is it true that you're going to be releasing an Albatros productions DVD/Blu-Ray set?" and they replied with "it's true! It's in the works, hopefully to be released at the end of this year". Fingers crossed!

Sorry to bring this conversation back to A Trip to the Moon,

At Manicsounds- that case you posted was the original order not the replacement correct? My case has no moon on the inside, just blank, cold, empty gray.


I had the chance to watch through the disc.... and the AIR score is completely unbearable. I listened through the entire track on youtube (that I posted earlier), and didn't think it was too bad. Hearing the score in pairing with the video is just a terrible experience. The score is distracting throughout the entire length and is always trying to outdo the action on screen - never complementing it. The only upside is that the awful countdown sequence from the AIR track was axed (5...4....3... ugh) and that the best song on the track (the only one that I liked) plays at the finale (it still doesn't match or complement the film though). I don't think I will ever sit through it again with the AIR score on. But hey, if you did like the AIR score, and can't get enough AIR, the reverse side of the back cover includes information on all of AIR's albums and where to buy them. This release probably should have been: Air presents, some old film with really cool music.

It's rather aggravating to then watch the black and white version with the three scores. The black and white version seems un-restored, and no better than in the big Melies set (yes, I know the restoration was on the color version, but it seems like they could've given some help or done something for the other version). I really don't see any point in getting the replacement disc, since the narration track is available on the DVD and only for the B&W (you'd be crazy to spend the $14.00 international fee. Sorry Manicsounds).

It's a total shame that this was all a contractual obligation, as it ruins all of the efforts that went into the restoration and this release. The Color restoration was spectacular - when you were able to "drone out" the wailing synthesizer. I shouldn't have to mute a film to watch it enjoyably. Curse whoever approved AIR's score.

Hey all, I'm the designer of the Flicker Alley US release of A Trip to The Moon Limited Edition Steelbook case. I can assure you that the inside is unprinted, just the brushed steel. We liked it that way. I know Jeff is very concerned with piracy, so this image intrigues me. Bizarre. There is no French Steelbook edition. I'm sure Jeff would like to know more about this case. No-one ever claimed that there was. There is, however, a French edition of the Blu-ray, for the benefit of those who either couldn't give two hoots about steelbooks or who find them actively annoying.

I'm just trying to be helpful and get to the bottom of the empty case picture. That mosaic image on the inside looks like it came from the French edition? But the image is a Steelbook. What does the front look like?
By the way, I'm wrapping up production on a standard Blu-Ray/DVD Combo edition of A Trip to The Moon. This will be the same content as the Steelbook Edition but in a standard package. This is the first time I've ever seen a company bitch so much and accuse their customers of dishonesty when they're just trying to get the product they paid for. Everyone I've ever received a faulty product from whether that be MoC, Arrow, Raro US, Raro Italy, BFI etc. have only ever asked for some proof of purchase, if any at all, before happily sending me a replacement. None have ever had the audacity to charge a replacement fee and attempt to extract more money from me to make me pay for their screw up, despite all being small companies.

I've always been under the impression that if the error came about due to outsourcing part of the product that labels will chase up the company responsible for delivering the faulty parts. If the label messed up themselves then they should accept the blame and attempt to make it up to the customer.

Criterion requested I return the White blu-ray disc, which is not ideal, but did not have the audacity to charge me for the replacement.

BFI asked me to return The Leopard - and I can understand why as they don't want the damaged ones staying in circulation, thus losing them sales or then having other people claim a replacement too based for that same disc - but gave me a voucher for their site at least even though I never used it.

Could anyone perhaps advise me on the best place to buy the Landmarks of Early Soviet Film box set? I'm considering buying direct from Flicker Alley but don't really want to run the risk of being stung by customs (I'm based in the UK.) Thanks in advance.

Since the demise of Axel, it's become almost impossible to import items over £15 with a 100% guarantee of no customs charges, particularly on specialist titles. Flicker Alley releases are esp. difficult as they are seldom offered at reasonable prices on Amazon UK Marketplace (and even sellers like "allyourmusic" on there are not 100% customs-friendly anymore). This release is too specialist for Movietyme. Even Barnes & Noble (with whom most UK buyers have a high success rate) don't seem to carry it - I couldn't find it anyway.

Some people are reporting Import CDs packages getting through customs, but they do declare values (rather ambiguously). If I were buying it, I'd order it from (US) Amazon, choose Expidited Shipping and pre-pay the VAT. That means there's no £8 Royal Mail fee and if the package isn't stopped by HMRC, Amazon refund all the VAT a month or two later - I can confirm this from experience.

The price is however high on Amazon at present - I think it was about $15 cheaper earlier this year.
