Criterion typically pairs releases from the same director if they're simultaneously in the pipeline.pzadvance wrote:How do you figure?mfunk9786 wrote:Well, I guess we finally have confirmation that we're not going to see Zodiac despite the mysterious OOP status of the Paramount special edition.

I have never seen the Game, but I am a fan of some of Fincher's films. With that said, the extras look unbelievable, and may persuade me.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Wasn't there a statement from Paramount recently that specifically stated that Zodiac was not being licensed to Criterion?
EDIT: It was David Prior.
"The very idea of a disc more exhaustive than the one we already did makes me exhausted... which isn't to say I wouldn't happily jump at the chance to get into Zodiac again. But there are no plans to revisit the project at this time. The disc going out of print has everything to do with 1) the film not catching fire at the box office and 2) the bloodshed going on in home video industry-wide. Sad as it makes me, the market has dramatically shrunk over the last few years, and it's become harder and harder to convince studios to invest in ambitious projects, let alone revisit past ones, particularly for films that didn't set their britches on fire to begin with.
All that said, I have no doubt that the special edition of Zodiac will find its way to market again eventually, if only to tie in with the release of some future Fincher project. In fact, I'm a little surprised they didn't re-release it to coincide with Dragon Tattoo. But unless the general customer base re-discovers the value of ownership and collectibility, I wouldn't expect too many full revisits of any but the most lucrative, blockbuster movies."

And:
"I shot David Prior a PM on the Home Theater Forum. He said that Criterion are not releasing Zodiac and he's equally as frustrated about Paramount letting the title go out of print. He thinks it's too big of a title for Paramount to license out and that he thinks they'll reissue the disc eventually. As for the extras that didn't make the previous release. He said it wasn't another disc full of extras but only a few small pieces that would have made Paramount go to a third disc and they declined because it would have been cost prohibitive to release a third disc for only a small amount of content."

I'm curious if hope for a Lili Marleen Criterion is no more? Interesting enough, I found this post from a few years ago showing "Unannounced Criterion Releases" and for the most part we know the fates of all of them (though a case can be had for the other head scratching one, Olympia) except for Lili Marleen.

For the past five months, Criterion has announced paired releases (Bergman, Soderbergh/Gray, Stillman, Dardenne(s), Carné). While there's no reason to suspect they'll keep this going, I wonder if we might see another such set in the next round? Rosemary's Baby could be partnered with The Tenant (though my own Halloween dream is for an upgrade of Jigoku alongside an individual release of Nakagawa's Ghost Story of Yotsuya).

Ohh, Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant on Blu would really make it a perfect month for me if they were announced for October.bainbridgezu wrote:For the past five months, Criterion has announced paired releases (Bergman, Soderbergh/Gray, Stillman, Dardenne(s), Carné). Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Both films would be appropriate additions to the Collection. But the question that really bugs me is when (when, not if) Rosemary's Baby is released by Criterion, would that also include Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby? Rosemary's Sequel is a sequel I can't stand in the least. I doubt very much that anyone will want to release this follow-up as a stand-alone, but I know people on Facebook will keep asking for this just out of curiosity if Criterion doesn't release it on a 2-disc with the Polanski to begin with.AfterTheRain wrote:Ohh, Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant on Blu would really make it a perfect month for me if they were announced for October.bainbridgezu wrote:For the past five months, Criterion has announced paired releases (Bergman, Soderbergh/Gray, Stillman, Dardenne(s), Carné). October looks promising regardless.

Earlier this year, it seemed like they were doing the low-MSRP titles once a month, then those stopped. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no more double-release treats.

I do not understand why they have not released Kwaidan already. They asked consumerns to vote on it several years ago. They had to be ready to release it if it won.Cinephrenic wrote:Kwaidan, Onibaba Blu's please for Oct.

Films playing at American Cinemateque credits Janus Films for the following:
MARKETA LAZAROVA
and a bunch of Fassbinder:
THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT
LOLA
VERONIKA VOSS
FOX AND HIS FRIENDS
THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS
MOTHER KUSTERS GOES TO HEAVEN
THE AMERICAN SOLDIER
FEAR OF FEAR
SATAN'S BREW
CHINESE ROULETTE
EFFI BRIEST
BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE
GODS OF THE PLAGUE
LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH

I can't imagine how Criterion are going to handle all the Fassbinders they now have. In the context of other directors films the bulk of which Criterion owns rights to, I think he's a much easier sell than someone like Naruse. So they won't just trickle out a couple of Eclipse sets, a couple of mainline releases, and then throw the rest up on Hulu. But I don't think he's as easy a sell as Kurosawa (and was certainly more prolific), so I don't see mainline releases for most of these films and certainly no lavish box set.

Whatever they do I hope Lili Marleen comes out soon and they put Satan's Brew on blu-ray.

I could certainly envision Merchant of Four Seasons, Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven and Fox and his Friends getting mainline releases.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I can imagine them trickling out, say, half a dozen of the higher profile titles on the mainline over several years, maybe in pairs, then packaging bunches of the harder sells in Eclipse sets. "Early Fassbinder" seems like an obvious candidate for Eclipse.
Another option would be to stick early films onto higher-profile Blus as extras (which means that at least we'd get them in HD). I can't think of any really obvious mainline box set candidates.

That's only one film. What makes it a box set?Jack Phillips wrote:Fontane Effi Briestzedz wrote: I can't think of any really obvious mainline box set candidates.

Holding out for giant glass-encased cardboard envelope holder, ala Fox and Universal's megasets. Maybe all of the titles folded inside a miniature kicked-out TV

I misread you.
What happened to The Marriage of Maria Braun? It's no longer possible for Criterion to issue the "BRD Trilogy" on Blu?

The rights moved from Wellspring to Janus - thus the boxset went OOP to reflect the new ownership (probably finished a printing and are now waiting for the Blu to be announced).Jack Phillips wrote:What happened to The Marriage of Maria Braun? I'm too lazy to check, but are there any new Fassbinder titles in this batch as opposed to that Goethe institut run?

Sure, but there's always the Louis Malle precedent. They can certainly give Fassbinder the same treatment in the mainline.Matt wrote:I can't imagine how Criterion are going to handle all the Fassbinders they now have.
