Speaking of Forman, Valmont would be another great film of his to add. When was Kaufman's Henry and June a hint? I'd love to see that one added soon.

That was just because Kaufman was Criterion Closeted back in April.

I hate to say it, but I stupidly made that sweeping generalization after having only watched two of the films of the list. The Divorce of Lady X was not on of them. I was just going off of reputation. I retract my earlier claim.

I'd like to see Peter Brook's Marat/Sade come out of nowhere.

Has there ever been a good release of this?

I hope Criterion gets a hold of the new restoration of Pandora's Box for a Blu-Ray upgrade....although @ 143 minutes they'll have to use a new soundtrack & that doesn't bode well for an imminent release, so maybe I'll have to drop $20 to see it tonight (SF Silent Film Fest/Castro Theater).

Aren't Cry of the City and The File on Thelma Jordan about due?

I don't think that either of those films were ever confirmed to be in production.

Was there ever a consensus if the wave from the New Year's drawing was a clue or not? I remember quite a few people suggesting either a reissue of The Last Wave or a release of Breaking The Waves. I wouldn't be surprised if Breaking the Waves turned up in November with Y Tu Mama Tambien, Pina, On the Waterfront.

I think your speculation is all wet.

Quite possible.

I was browsing the mubi.com forums last night (blech) and noticed a poster named Santino made the following remark a couple weeks back:

Yes, I have good information backing up Criterion eventually releasing Breaking the Waves. However I don’t know when this is going to happen.

I'm generally inclined to believe that insider information posted on Mubi, DVDTalk, HTF, tends to be bullshit based off past experience. The post did remind me of the 2012 New Year's clue which had a large wave past the Coney Island sign. There was some speculation if it was a clue or not. If he's legit and the wave in the newsletter is indeed a clue, it could very well appear in November and catch a lot of people by surprise. It's not a strong argument but certainly has more of a basis in reality than all this talk about The Tenant being announced on Monday.

I think he was making a pun about the water imagery in all of those films/titles, Ian.

I didn't watch the Trainspotting teaser on Shallow Grave, but I find it kind of odd that they included it as an extra on the disc.

It makes more sense if you watch the extras. It's not actually a trailer for Trainspotting. It's a teaser/promo piece that uses a lot of references to Shallow Grave to sell the picture.

I wouldn't read too much into that. I think it has more of a 'historical' context.
In the UK when Shallow Grave came out on VHS, it included that teaser for Trainspotting. At that time Boyle, Hodges and MacDonald were the darlings of British cinema, and Trainspotting was already greenlit.

It's interesting that most people didn't put two and two together with Ewan McGregor from Shallow Grave and him in the Teaser because he looked so different.

The Trainspotting teaser also gets mentioned in the MacDonald/Hodges commentary too, as part of the discussion of how important the success of Shallow Grave was in getting Trainspotting into production (its inclusion on the disc also reminds me of those Police Dog trading cards that Soderbergh casually mentions during the Traffic commentary that got included as an easter egg on the original DVD. Although I don't have the Blu of Traffic yet to check if that survived the transition to the new format)

Regarding the cards for Traffic: They are included but I believe the DVD contained photos of the whole set while the Blu-ray only contained a handful of photos.

Has anyone heard any rumors about which US company landed the rights to the Hammer restorations? It's too bad that Criterion decided not to launch a cult label. Apparently Shout Factory! doesn't have the rights. I kind of wish it was Criterion but it's unlikely. I hope it's not Olive. Chances are they would just release barebone editions.

No rumors, but I wouldn't be surprised if Kino had picked them up- they seemed pretty aggressive in acquiring titles for their Redemption Films banner..

That banner is the company's name. The titles under Redemption are owned by the UK company Redemption. In all likelihood Lionsgate has the Hammer rights as many of those titles of Studio Canal.

I don't think the Hammer film restorations would automatically fall under the Studio Canal/Lionsgate banner because of the Canal library deal with Lionsgate. The original press release stated that the project was a collaboration between Warner Brothers, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Studio Canal and Pinewood Studios. On their restoration blog they've posted several times about a forthcoming press release announcing a US distribution partner. I think Canal has been releasing these in the UK but it could be any number of distributors in the US. (It may very well end up being Lionsgate.) I get the idea that this was a package that was put together by Hammer themselves and that they are the ones selling the rights. It's kind of similar to what Lynch did with the Lime Green box, in which by some small miracle he got all the studios on board for that one project and was able to release the set under his Absurda banner.
