Robert Downey Jr. Still Attached To ‘Inherent Vice'; Charlize Theron Possibly Joining As Film Gears Up

Good as he was in The Master, I can't help but consider that a downgrade (if only because I'd really like to see RDJ in a role like this).

That's really unexpected. I saw RDJ at an even not too long ago where he confirmed that he was in, and expressed his pretty fervid enthusiasm for the project.

Considering that he sold his soul to every Marvel project that they can crank out, it may have just been a scheduling issue. But this fits on the pile of famous PTA almost-roles (Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L Jackson in Boogie Nights, George C. Scott in Magnolia, the unknown young actor Kel O'Neill who was originally playing Eli in There Will Be Blood, etc) quite nicely.

Not really. It's one of maybe two Pynchon novels that isn't nearly impossible to adapt.

It's also the only of his works that Pynchon readily offered up for adaptation, so this wasn't a matter of PTA being the first person to try to film a Pynchon novel.

Megan Ellison is no longer involved, but Warner has financed the film. Robert Elswit is lensing again. Shooting starts later this month.

All wonderful news, even the Ellison bit. Something tells me that the financial end of things will be less restrictive, especially after The Master lost Annapurna money, with Warners.

Also, if Anderson edits the film quickly enough, we could see a late December release! Excellent.

Well, if Anderson gets to make the film he wants and this isn't a case where Ellison's company dropped out unhappily, it's great news because it's a studio taking a step in the right direction. I'd rather have the industry move in that direction than rely on a few saviors new to the business with really deep pockets.

Ah, the awards season obsession. I doubt PTA will rush a film because of the Oscars.

Of course he will. Warners will want him to, and if he feels like he can do it, he'll want to as well. You think these guys don't want recognition for their work?

I like this strategy better. This isn't a film that's going to win Best Picture, nor Best Director, probably not any of the major ones (just look at the last three f-ing years). Screw the Oscars and go for Cannes. Unless he's planning to shoot another feature in 2014, why not?

In the case of American History X Kaye wanted to reshoot the whole thing so was fired. Norton managed t save the film by editing something the studio would be willing to release. Outside of that I can't think of anything his negative reputation is built on.
