A meaningless coincidence, but she hadn't crossed my mind for a very, very long time until this morning, when I was reading James Naremore's book on acting in cinema - the last chapter is a study of The King of Comedy, and it includes her in its discussion of how the actors' own real-life public image was used in the film.

He was one of the few rock keyboardists to make it look cool (it probably helped he was in a "dangerous band"), and maybe one of the best at it. I thought he had a better touch for piano than the Gibson/Vox organ sound he was famous for. My ex-girlfriend described the Fender Rhodes on "Riders On The Storm" like raindrops.

And kudos for saying from the outset how horrible he thought the Oliver Stone movie was.

According to a couple of Doors books I've read some of their best, most memorable shows were when Morrison was too inebriated to perform leaving Manzarek to sing. Curious to hear what Densmore has to say given their falling out and legal battles of recent years. Sad but hopefully they were able to patch things up before his passing.

I'm actually a much bigger X fan, but there's no denying that the Doors have been cited as strong influence on many of my favorites as well - Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Joy Division and of course, X (check out the "Soul Kitchen" cover on their debut).

Absolutely.

I knew about his production for X but the Echo and the Bunnymen work is news to me.

The Doors were a big part of my life at one time and the residue from that still lingers. This one is going to affect me for a while.

Yes, I think the Doors were a great band, but I really fell in love with him through his production of Los Angeles through More Fun in the New World. (And his keyboards on "Nausea" are pretty ripping.)
