cdnchris wrote:Right?? The poster image (which they jimmied into that) was really effective on its own. But I guess they had to imply there is also running and people staring off at stuff (and I've noticed they've been sticking that RT logo directly on the artwork now, not just decals or stickers like I've seen previously).
For what it's worth, the "Rotten Tomatoes" logo is a removable decal on the cardboard slip-sleeve, although it's printed on the case cover itself.

It gave me a good laugh because I don't remember Kilmer looking like that in the movie, and I don't find it very representative of Spartan. At first I wondere where they'd gotten this image from, but Google tells me it's not the first time it has been used on a poster or cover for the movie.

Is looking at that cover more fun than miniature golf?

I wonder if there's any research to suggest that people are more likely to buy a film that has these awards or the Rotten Tomatoes stickers. I have a hard time imagining a lot of blind buys are done in brick-and-mortar stores. Even if people are blind buying, I have a hard time imagining that the stickers are persuasive at all.

At least, that huge ass Awards sticker is removable and isn't part of the cover itself.
Except, maybe, if it's actually printed on the actual cover just below the sticker ! \:D/

What's really under that sticker is Laura Dern's cover credit. I guess it was deemed more important for potential buyers to find out that this is one of thousands of movies certified fresh on RT than to find out that another major talent starred in the film along with MICHAEL SHANNON

Looks like somebody dropped their porcelain Anatoly Solonitsyn doll and it cracked.

Never mind, I'm sure there's another, slightly smaller Solonitsyn doll inside.

The example below shows what happens when Wal-Mart gets their hands on censoring art they see as unsuitable to sell in their stores...

To continue in a similar "enormous heads and what in the world is supposed to be happening there" vein of both that one and A. Rublev above, I believe this one belongs here. This is the cover design Paramount used on DVD releases around the world. The Blu-ray went back to the memorable hanging image of the original poster.
(Here's a link to a larger image that shows better just how wretched it really is.)

Not the worst cover in the world, but unimaginative and doesn't convey that it's a film about young junkie mothers. I guess this is typical, pushing an actor who later becomes a star, whereas Keira Knightley is actually a somewhat minor secondary character. Also, she doesn't look like that at all in the film, as her character has light hair and little makeup, a point her character emphasizes in one scene in the film. Pure is from 2002.
Solid film, though definitely a downer.
