We were expecting both Zelig and Hardcore, but I'm still excited about both of them. And I will stand up for The Russia House, which I think is generally underrated. It shows the strength of Le Carre's writing, how well his strong sense of character translates to even lesser adaptations. And it has a sensational supporting turn by Ken Russell playing a spymaster as if he's everyone's crazy uncle.

Yeah, I like Hardcore. That said, Twilight Time have a habit of releasing movies that I'd buy under a lot of circumstances, but for which I'm not quite ready to justify the $35 +/- price tag, so I probably won't buy Hardcore until there's a sale, and perhaps not even then. Lenny and the three Truffauts and some others are like this, too. The only TT title I can recall paying full price for was Wild at Heart, though in that case I'm glad that I did.

Is it a better movie than "Les Grandes Personnes" (aka Time Out for Love) released on blu-ray by Gaumont in French ?
Not especially. It's a little slicker, maybe. A bit more "Hollywood". But also a little dreary. Though probably worth it if you've got a thing for Jean Seberg.

I suspect the BBC's new adaptation of Le Carré's The Night Manager - which has attracted a lot of acclaim and big viewing figures here in the UK, and reaches the US later this month - might have had an influence.

I love this film and wrote a little bit about it on the last page following the announcement:
In the French Style is a great film, and absolutely essential for Jean Seberg fans. Produced and written by Irwin Shaw (adapting two of his own short stories), Seberg plays an American who comes to Paris to be a painter, but ends up becoming a party girl. There are many terrific scenes, but the entire finale is simply the greatest acting of Seberg's career.
If you're a Jean Seberg fan you should definitely see it. It's a great film and she gives a brilliant performance.

Surprisingly good film, I was lucky enough to catch a 35mm screening at BAM. Glad to see a good Blu-Ray release that may do justice to Deakins' work.

Underappreciated gem (partly because it was treated like an unwanted child by the studio), I only knew about it because it had been championed by critics like Jim Hoberman and I think Dave Kehr. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I recall a post-'60s/Vietnam hangover tone that could indeed extend to the end of the New Hollywood when you placed when it was made. What happened with the film would repeat itself too many times, most notably at Columbia when gems like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Housekeeping were again treated like unwanted children when they should've been promoted with a great deal of pride.

Cutter fans looking for more in the same vein might want to check out Who'll Stop the Rain, Karel Reisz's great, mostly forgotten adaptation of Robert Stone's classic Vietnam novel Dog Soldiers, with Nick Nolte as a sailor who smuggles home heroin Michael Moriarty stole during the war. Silly title change but the various Creedence tracks are used very well, particularly a nighttime shootout at an abandoned commune modeled after Ken Kesey's place diegetically set to "Hey Tonight"

Yup. It's mean and evil through and through, especially when there is fun poster art that hasn't been used on previous DVD releases.

When will Twilight Time release a Criterion Designs-style hardcover coffee table book featuring all these beauties from the past five years? I want to see all the issued cover designs gloriously enlarged, along with concept sketches and rejected alternate designs.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but the new Cutter's Way blu-ray looks and sounds spectacular. It has Jack Nitzsche's entire score as an isolated audio track.

I'm very excited to get it, although I wish they could've gotten a commentary with Ivan Passer.
Hopefully The Indian Runner will be on the docket, too, and that's also got a fabulous Nitzsche score.

This is a bit more of a general question related to TT but does anyone aware of licensing know quite what the procedure would be for another label putting out TT stuff as the licenses expire? Say Criterion decides they do want to put out Body Double for whatever reason - are they not allowed to officially get the license to release it until August (which would be three years after the fact), or would it be conceivable for them to release it at any point after three years following the release (meaning, they may well be working on it and have contracts signed now as the license just applies to when things can be officially released)? I'm not sure I'm wording this correctly and this is one hypothetical (though I think of the currently OOP TT titles this is certainly the one that I imagine will get rereleased by somebody very soon after its license expires) but I'm just wondering if it's realistic to expect it to happen in the near future rather than a ways off.

I guess anybody could buy it if it's available. Then, it's just a question of whether Sony would let other people get it or not.

There could also be the case that TT buys numerous times the licences but don't re-do their Encore release. If a title hasn't sold out, it might be better for TT to prevent a competitor doing a potentially more affordable or cost-competitive release.

I reviewed the French BD when it was released and it was using a visibly pre-existing HD master (with the usual PQ limitations). Is TT using a newer source ?

I just saw The Big Heat on the old Columbia DVD. Absolutely loved it and have to buy it.

I don't own any twilight time titles.

Is the best place to buy twilight time from their site? Do they do free shipping? Doesn't look like Amazon has it. Do they do any big sales worth waiting for, or is $30 as good as it gets? Doesn't look like much on any extras like criterion does, so after shipping and tax it's almost $40, though reviews say the transfer is excellent

Yes, their site is probably the best option. You can also check out Screen Archives Entertainment, which is their partner, and may offer very slightly reduced shipping rates. Neither have free shipping offers. There was just a sale which ended, inwhich Big Heat was not a part; because of this, it will probably be until the mid-late Summer before any offers happen, and if I remember rightly last year in August Screen Archives offered just 10% off, which is not an amazing deal. Assuming it doesn't sell out before then, it will most likely be available for $20 at some point, but probably not until November.

TT makes very good products but much of their business model is contingent on you being willing to pay the full price in fear it will sell out before it drops further.

I had TT's original edition of The Big Heat but sold it in case the "encore edition" would offer improved picture quality, planning to pick it up either way. I'll wait to see when it drops to $20. Keep in mind that there are also region-free releases available from Spain (Los Sobornados) and France (Règlement de comptes). If the Twilight Time one sells out sooner than expected, I'll just pick up the Spanish release. I don't especially care about the TT commentary or isolated score track, and I already have the Scorsese and Mann pieces on DVD, in the Sony/Columbia Film Noir I set.

The Spanish release is a bootleg though. The French one from Wild Side is official, and actually contains the bonus used now by TT for their Encore edition.
