We got a new cover for Viridiana and convinced a major DVD company to favor its consumers. So can we just move on and talk about Spielberg or something.
It appears that the useful role of this thread is over. There was an unprecedented level of concern about the original cover design. Criterion changed it, whether due to our protests or some other reason we will never know. It is most unlikely they will change it again. Hence posts on this thread now have only a therapeutic value of expressing our individual joy or frustration at the change. That can be entertaining, but opportunities for entertainment abound elsewhere on this forum as well. Perhaps the moderator should consider closing this one.
How long did you guys bitch until they changed the Viridiana cover? I wasn't familiar with that film so I just let it go, but Malkovich is a silly film and could work with a marionette cover like all the clues have been.
Anyone have an image file of the original pink cover? I can't seem to find it anywhere outside of this potato vision resolution that surely wasn't what Criterion originally put online:
Somehow still angry that it never went to the printer. Would love to own a copy.

This is the best I found. I don't think it is the original. According to Wayback Machine, large covers on criterioncollection.com were 348x490 pixels (they do not have Viridiana archived unfortunately), this one is 338x480 pixels.
I adore it. One of my favorite covers in Criterion history, and I’m not being sarcastic or ironic. Captures the spirit of the film much better than the ‘official’ one.

I will actually concede that point. Radiance's cover uses the same color and the same image, but with a shadowy Fernando Rey looking over Pinal's shoulder, which I think captures the predatory nature of his character perfectly and thus captures the spirit of the film even more.
