Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
I'll have to check out that book. Regarding anything championing W.C. Fields's films, an old Entertainment Weekly article and Roger Ebert are the only ones that comes to mind. That's how I got to know The Bank Dick (Ebert's favorite) and It's a Gift, and that was many years ago. Fields was a great comedian - even Orson Welles wanted to make a film with him when he first got to Hollywood.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
So glad to see Fields getting some attention. Like so many comedians who flourished in the 30's, a link to vaudeville. Perhaps not the most "cinematic" of films, but the best of them (especially IT'S A GIFT), can cause serious injury to one falling out of a chair from laughter.

Sounds great!Godot wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 7:27 pmThe biographies of Fields by Simon Louvish and James Curtis are both entertaining and have observations about his performance style and evolution. But the two books I recommend for analysis are Louvish's entry in the BFI Film Classics on It's a Gift (1994) and William K. Everson's The Art of W.C. Fields (1967). It's a Gift is one of my favorite films, so any discussion of it is delightful. Louvish does a commendable job of connecting the movie's skits and characters to previous films and stage routines, to emphasize how different Harold Bissonette is from Fields' usual protagonist, and how he tweaks details to create memorable scenes. Everson's book is like his many others, with profuse plot and scene descriptions, written before home video, when older films could be difficult to see, so he acknowledges the reader may not know or remember. But he also inserts observations about Fields' overall career, compares him to other comedians and some of the meta context, and exudes his usual enthusiasm for the films that makes you want to rush out and watch them again.
I actually had the BFI book sortlistet on amazon.co.uk, though Brexit has reduced my activity there

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
KL Insider confirmed another 116 titles licensed from Universal. Blu-ray only.
3 TV movies, 2 4KUHD titles (one from 2000s, one from 2010s), no silents or TV shows. Some pre-code titles, apparently lots of film noir titles.
8 Code Red and 6 Scorpion.
They're "looking to add 1-3 more titles that need some additional research, one of those is a TV movie."
Some further narrowing of titles in deal being done on Blu-ray.com forums by standard Q&A about release years / actors / directors.

Hopefully their other Sirks have performed well enough to have *finally* licensed Has Anybody Seen My Gal?

With that many titles licensed, there's a good chance any film Universal released on DVD is eventually coming via KLSC. Wish other studios were as generous

Well, I just asked: no Sirk in the new batch. The wait goes on.

KL Insider gives decades of releases:

1930s x 24
1940s x 23
1950s x 39
1969s x 11

1990s x 4
2000s x 1
2010s x 1

They also said there are another ten Noir sets planned, which is probably a chunk of those 40s and 50s licenses.

It's a bit disappointing that they've got another two dozen 30s films from Universal and yet no Edward L. Cahn films.
Kino did confirm to me that they've got at least one James Whale though, so that's something.

Was it known around here that Peter Ibbetson is being released on August 10? Because I just found this today and hadn't seen it mentioned on these boards.

I wonder if the 2 UHDs are the other two Riddick movies - The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013)?

Kino's advertising a summer sale, and going by an order I placed very recently, a lot of the sale prices remain the same, but alas their Blu-ray of A Sunday in the Country can now be had for $10 and I bought it for $18.

Re: Kino Lorber Studio Classics Acquisitions
The current sale has a bunch of Godard titles cheap, including (what are not advertised as, but which surely are) Cohen releases going for much less than Cohens typically go for. I also noticed that the Cohen blu of Under the Sun of Satan is on sale there- for a lot more than the others (~$25) but that’s significantly less than it’s been marked at by third party sellers for the last year or so. I just assumed it was OOP and doomed to be a greater splurge
