THE RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE (Le Viol du vampire)
(Jean Rollin, 1968)
Release date: 21 August 2023
Limited Edition

Pre-order on 4K UHD or Blu-ray.

Jean Rollin’s startling debut feature, 1968’s The Rape of the Vampire (Le Viol du vampire), introduces his unique take on vampirism, establishing the blend of surrealism, eroticism, and horror that would become his trademark.

In the film's first part, four strange women living in a decrepit château – and all believing themselves to be ancient vampires – are visited by a psychoanalyst who attempts to rid them of their apparent delusion. In the second, the Queen of the Vampires presides over a diabolical clinic, unaware that the head doctor is plotting against her.

With its surreal black-and-white images and riveting free-jazz score by François Tusques, The Rape of the Vampire was released in Paris to a scandalised response during the chaos of May ’68, heralding the arrival of a major new talent in the fantastique cinema. This new edition also includes Rollin’s 1965 short The Far Countries (Les Pays loin) restored in 4K.

Jean Rollin’s second feature film, and his first in colour, The Nude Vampire (La Vampire nue) finds the master of the fantastique combining his trademark erotic-vampire themes with an homage to the mystery serials of his youth.

Jealousy, vengeance, obsession, cannibalism, and blood-drinking collide in Fascination, director Jean Rollin’s decadent fantasy of sex and death.

With its standout performance from Brigitte Lahaie (The Night of the Hunted), as the scythe-wielding Eva, and an evocative score from Philippe D’Aram (The Living Dead Girl), Fascination is one of the purest expressions of Rollin’s unique fantastique aesthetic.

THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTED (La Nuit des traquées)
(Jean Rollin, 1980)
Release date: 21 August 2023
Limited Edition

Pre-order on 4K UHD or Blu-ray.

One of Jean Rollin’s least-seen and most underrated works, The Night of the Hunted (La Nuit des traquées) finds the director moving away from his trademark tales of vampirism to explore a nightmarish, dystopian world.

In the dead of night, Elisabeth is rescued from unknown pursuers by Robert and taken to safety. But, after she is kidnapped and taken to an austere clinic whose distressed and abused patients are suffering from progressive memory loss, Robert sets out to find her and discover what is taking place in the clinic.

Shot at night on a shoestring budget, with a cast mostly drawn from France’s adult-film industry, The Night of the Hunted stars Rollin regulars Brigitte Lahaie (Fascination) and Natalie Perrey (Lips of Blood), and offers a stark and melancholic take on contemporary society.

THE ESCAPEES
(Jean Rollin, 1981)
Release date: 9 December 2024
Limited Edition (World premiere on 4K UHD)

Pre-order the UK Blu-ray, the UK 4K UHD, the US Blu-ray or the US 4K UHD edition.

Between the dystopian paranoia of The Night of the Hunted and the visceral excesses of The Living Dead Girl, director Jean Rollin takes a surreal detour into the Parisian demi-monde with The Escapees (Les Echappées, also known as Les Paumées du petit matin).

When two young women, the wayward Michelle (Laurence Dubas) and the withdrawn Marie (Christiane Coppé), escape from an asylum, they find themselves drifting through a nightmarish world of burlesque troupes, lascivious sailors, and hardened criminals. After a violent confrontation, the police close in...

With its supporting cast of key collaborators, including actors Brigitte Lahaie (Fascination), Louise Dhour (Requiem for a Vampire), Bernard Papineau (The Night of the Hunted), Jean-Loup Philippe (Lips of Blood), Natalie Perry (The Nude Vampire) and composer Philippe D'Aram (Two Orphan Vampires), The Escapees is at once atypical, yet unmistakeably Rollin.

TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES
(Jean Rollin, 1997)
Release date: 24 April 2023
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Pre-order on 4K UHD or Blu-ray.

Originally released in 1997, Two Orphan Vampires (Les Deux orphelines vampires) finds Jean Rollin, the master of the fantastique, returning to the vampire genre with which he had made his name.

By day, blind orphans Henriette and Louise seem to be the picture of innocence. But when darkness falls, their sight returns, and they wander the streets of Paris, encountering the city’s strange nocturnal denizens, and leaving a trail of corpses in their quest for fresh blood.

Featuring startling performances from novice leads Alexandre Pic and Isabelle Teboul, alongside Tina Aumont (Modesty Blaise) and Rollin regulars Nathalie Perrey (The Shiver of the Vampires) and Brigitte Lahaie (Fascination), Two Orphan Vampires is a beautiful and melancholy summation of Rollin’s unique and arresting style.

Ah so based on the spine numbers and the original release dates, and going off what has previously appeared on home video, we are perhaps looking at these future releases:

400 The Rape of the Vampire
401 The Nude Vampire
402 The Shiver of the Vampires
403 Requiem for a Vampire
404 The Iron Rose
405 Schoolgirl Hitchhikers
406 The Demoniacs
407 Lips of Blood
408 The Grapes of Death
409 Fascination
410 The Night of the Hunted
411 The Escapees
412 Zombie Lake
413 The Living Dead Girl
414 The Sidewalks of Bangkok
415 Lost in New York
416 Killing Car
417 The Two Orphan Vampires
418 Dracula's Fiancee

edit: a poster at Blu-ray.com has suggested almost the same list, but with Countess X in place of Zombie Lake. Which is maybe more likely as it is listed at Park Circus along with these 18 other Rollin films. Though my understanding is that Countess X is a hardcore porn title, so it presumably couldn't be released in the UK. Hopefully Indicator have got a hold of Zombie Lake separately.

That poster was me, I was C&Ping that list from a post I made last year when it came to light Indicator were doing what we thought at the time was a Rollin box set (or sets). I basically just listed all the titles on Park Circus via the rights-holder (Salvation Films).

I seem to remember someone questioning Countess X, so we'll have to see, but you're probably right with the above. Someone else mentioned a few of these might be bundled together in a double- or triple-bill, or a few in a box set. Some may also be Blu-ray only, we'll have to wait and see, but it looks like Indicator are going to go with UHD quite confidently to start with (and we wouldn't want a situation like MoC and their Pialat titles, where everyone probably retrospectively wishes they had done them all on Blu-ray).

Amazing to think that Rollin is getting his work showcased on UHD! I would have expected Fascination to have been the safest first release but these two are very exciting in themselves. I would also have expected Shiver to be in a trilogy release with the earlier two films, but maybe being in UHD meant that it had to be separate and/or Indicator were confident enough in it standing alone (As rapta mentions, I wonder if the other two films will get double billed together?) Perhaps the most indelible image of Shiver of the Vampires is probably that Nosferatu-recalling one of the main vampire slinking out of a grandfather clock on the chime of midnight!

I keep thinking that Indicator could really position Rollin's zombie film The Living Dead Girl (that was notoriously highly edited by the BBFC in its original UK VHS release in the late 1990s) into being a proto- 'erotic cannibal' work of the subgenre that is enjoying a renaissance at the moment with Raw and Bones And All!

I’ll be supporting the Rollin 4ks . Even though these are not necessarily the titles I’d go for first, I’m buying them in hope that more releases will follow.

Very exciting confirmation.

I'm rather fond of Rollin's Shiver and Requiem vampire movies - perfect late night entertainment back when I was a teenager.

Zombie Lake is probably his most accessible and entertaining movie...even if it is hopelessly dreadful, Rollin being a last minute replacement for Jess Franco, who weirdly did the similar but considerably more Rollin-esque Oasis of the Zombies. But it does allow you the unique sight of Rollin being eaten by zombies!

Hard to imagine each of these titles getting an individual deluxe release (though an Indicator limited-edition Schoolgirl Hitchhikers with 80-page perfect-bound book and poster would be something to see). I imagine there might be themed sets along the lines of their Hammer boxes: Zombie Rollin, Pirate Rollin, Sci-fi Rollin, that kind of thing.

If Shiver of the Vampires and Two Orphan Vampires (neither of which would typically be thought of as top tier Rollin) are getting this sort of single film deluxe treatment then I would expect the same for almost all those listed above.

Schoolgirl Hitchhikers is more likely to be a supporting feature to another release, and Sidewalks of Bangkok, Lost in New York and Killing Car would probably form a single release. But everything else I predict will be released in the same manner as these first two.

Is there no love for Rollin's last two films The Night of the Clocks and The Mask of Medusa?
I would assume Rollin fans will already have most of his work, but it took me quite a while to track down English-friendly copies of those two.

I was fascinated by Tim Lucas' review in I believe Sight & Sound, of an import DVD of Night of the Clocks. Got the impression that it was an important movie in the Rollin body of work.

certainly I'm looking out for Fascination, Lips of Blood and the wonderful Grapes of Death.

obviously none of us know the situation with available materials and how it would affect the chances of each Rollin film coming to 4k.

To be fair, Tim Lucas could Zombie Lake sound important. He really is the master of the oversell.

So very much looking forward to these releases, and the efforts to include all the archival extras is truly appreciated. Though I guess it helps that Daniel Gouyette seems to be the source or contact for a number of them.

Here’s hoping Indicator’s license include’s all of the films Rollin made under his own name. I would dearly love to see his later films that have long gone out of print.

Mondo Digital on The Shiver of the Vampires:
The UHD is not yet available for appraisal, but the Blu-ray looks spectacular with the new restoration bringing out an intensity in the colors (especially reds) that will make you feel like you're hallucinating. The contrast is also improved with bright areas now displaying more detail and subtle gradations than ever before, particularly with all the flickering candles and torches that don't simply look blinding white anymore.

Mondo Digital on Two Orphan Vampires:
This is still a gritty, very low budget film, and while the UHD wasn't available yet for comparison, the new Blu-ray benefits from a careful compression job that brings out even more natural texture in the grain. In terms of color timing it's very close to the earlier HD presentation, albeit a little brighter in some shots.

I can only second this "gritty yet natural-looking" feedback. I was however surprised by how Two Orphan Vampires looks : just looking at it, I thought it was shot in the 70s !

A few years ago, I watched Dracula's Fiancee from 2002 and was convinced it was a 70s film that just didn't see a release until the aughts, it was so indistinguishable from Rollin's early stuff. Appropriate for an artist obsessed by memory that his films seem perpetually caught in the past even on a visual level.
