I've never had the desire to see any Hemingway adaptation, but if done right I'd expect this one to work more than most with this medium

None of his novels are particularly 'action-packed' but comparatively, that one is the most, so I could see it being crafted as a decent war mini-epic. That's why I don't want to see the film adaptations - I love a few of his novels, yet their strengths are not actionably observable

I kind of like Borzage's A Farewell to Arms even though it's absolutely ridiculous. My memory of For Whom... is that it was just punishingly long.

The Killers (either version)? To Have and Have Not? The Breaking Point? All are well worth seeing.

True, I haven't read To Have and Have Now and The Killers are more inspired by a short than a straight adaptation. I was only thinking of the key works, i.e. the multiple adaptations of Farewell to Arms

Islands in the Stream is also excellent. Petrov’s The Old Man and the Sea is honestly one of the best films ever.

Hawks's To Have and Have Not and Borzage's A Farewell to Arms are the two best IMHO, but the former isn't the best example because it's more or less a whole new work made for the screen. (If Hawks isn't exaggerating too much, it was never meant to be an adaptation of the original story, mainly because he thought it was Hemingway's worst book with only certain elements that were usable. IIRC he claimed Hemingway admitted to him that he wrote the book "for the money.")

A Farewell to Arms is interesting because in a lot of ways Borzage and Hemingway's best work had opposing sensibilities - in this case, Borzage's wins out (especially with an ending that could only come from Borzage), but you can also see what Hemingway's material brought to the film's aesthetic beyond supplying characters and a story. Great film, but it's a better representation of Borzage's art than Hemingway's.

They've been overwhelmed with demand this time, it seems. My order took a whole week to even ship but I checked their FAQ where they asked for patience and it dispatched within the extended timeframe they gave so I didn't follow up. It then arrived a few days after.
