Jim Benson has called the dropping of their bonus material for Columbo "a bizarre technicality," and states they plan to turn the material into a book.
All is not lost! I'm Jim Benson. When my writing partner Scott Skelton and I recently found out our months of exhaustive research, new interviews, and treasure trove of never-before-revealed facts we uncovered about Columbo were NOT going to appear on the new Blu-Ray release (due to a bizarre technicality) we were devastated. And so were the fans. How could all this amazing content be buried forever, never to see the light of day?

Which gave us an idea for just one more thing: What if we took all that incredible material, added even more that we couldn't fit in the commentaries, including behind-the-scenes photos, news clips, and more...and made it into the greatest TV book of all time? (Just like we did with our ultimate 800-page, nine pound, "Rod Serling's Night Gallery" hardcover coffee table book?)

By popular demand, we've decided to do it. You may not be able to listen to our content, but you WILL be able to read it, in The Ultimate Columbo book!

I love that the first post after the announcement of the book is a guy whining that he doesn’t read books (and neither does any other Millennial).

Glad to hear that the work will be available in some form and the people who worked on it will still receive some compensation and recognition.

It sounds like KLSC will be signing new deals with Paramount, Universal, MGM and TF1

Maybe with the TF1 deal, we'll get a Blu-Ray for Emmanuel Mouret's Un baiser s'il vous plaît...but probably not. The TF1 catalog for your browsing pleasure.

Assuming they even know what these films are, they’ll surely release Les nom des gens for its ridiculous nude scene alone

The Names of Love is still with Music Box, unless their rights are about to expire. Indeed most of the bigger-name films in the catalog (at least from an American perspective) already have U.S. distributors—which makes me wonder if the deal might include films Kino/KL has previously released, e.g. Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train. I feel more de Broca is close to a lock (sigh) but maybe they'll do some Téchiné or Claude Miller. I'd love a Blu of Set Me Free, but let's be real here, we're much more likely to get Vidocq or Lucky Luke.

More OOP based on previously being in the "While Supplies Last" sale and now no longer appearing on the website:

The Inspector - The DePatie-Freleng Collection (1965-1959)
Nixon (1995)

And a title that will be returning to the WSL sale after being assumed OOP:

The Laughing Policeman (1973)

Really surprised to see that they finally announced Valmont after saying for quite a while that MGM would only provide them with a subpar HD master

Kazan/Pinter’s The Last Tycoon on 4K is a nice surprise, too. One of those films I go back to every few years and see more merit in

Which is why they are doing their own 2K transfer from the interpositive.

It’s just strange that they didn’t go that route earlier

New sale is live through October 10th.

Newer blu additions @ $9.99 include Jóhann Jóhannsson's First and Last Men (doesn't include the CD that the DG combo release does), Pietro Marcello's Scarlet, the new restoration of Force of Evil w/ISS commentary, Milestone's release of The Spanish Dancer (1923), Metrograph's release of Millennium Mambo with Adrian Martin/Cristina Alvarez Lopez video essay, Abel Gance's La fin du monde, and Guy Maddin's Tales From the Gimli Hospital re-do.

There's also the K Austin Collins commentary on Millennium Mambo. For $10 a few months after its release, new scan, first time on BD...

Just noticing they released Der Kongreß tanzt/Congress Dances earlier this year, and it's now only $9.99. Also, One Potato Two Potato is great and only $6.49. And that new Greenaway Blu-ray set with ZOO, Falls, etc. is only $14.99

plenty of good stuff this go around, I'll be sinking my wallet even further it seems...thank you all for some of these picks, some of which weren't even on my radar.

in other news, Kino reveal on Facebook they're opening Fear and Desire theatrically, possibly preluding that UHD upgrade of it they alluded to before. hopefully they gain the ability to include all of Kubrick's early films this time instead of just the one they did on BD (which MOC was able to do)

For those who haven't got the Lubitsch in Berlin MoC set (or maybe just want the apparently new Joseph McBride commentaries), there's The Doll + I Don't Want to Be a Man, released last month, for $12.99.

If you have any interest in jazz, swing, dance, or 1940s / WWII American music and culture, The Soundies collection is a steal for $25, it's got something like 200 music videos and is immensely entertaining.

Finally got around to watching The Great Moment and really enjoyed the film but holy shit the master that goes in and out of windowboxing for every time McCrea's character is reading a book/text appears on the screen is maddening and terrible.
