So for those keeping score...we've got the Theatrical Cut (120 mins), the Director's Cut (124 mins), the Director's Restored Edition (124 mins), and now this "Final" Cut (120 mins). I don't know what Mann is still futzing about with, but I hope we might still get the Theatrical in 4K included on a disc and close the book on this. He's spent decades messing around with extra footage sourced from VHS tapes (If I remember correctly it even has the Time Code burned in). Why doesn't he try to re-edit one of his shitty movies instead, this one was already great.

I truly detest the Director’s Cut. The climactic shoot-out is impossible to follow with the cuts he made, and it removes a really beautiful shot of Graham going into an elevator in his Atlanta hotel

Speaking of said film, it’s bizarre that the wonderful score never got a commercial release

The issue of his soundtracks almost mirrors some of the stuff about home video releases. The Heat soundtrack emphasizes the needle drops mixed in with some of Elliot Goldenthal’s major themes, but his entire score for it has never been released officially. The end titles he composed for it was repurposed for the following years Michael Collins.

The soundtracks for the films he did after this up to Public Enemies tended to follow in the same way, causing some disappointment certain cues were missing. Ironically one of the motifs in Public Enemies was the cue set to the climax of Heat, a sparse but tense string melody.

The Indiewire article mentions it'll be using "a few shots from an interpositive." Did they find a better source for that original ending or something? Better than the VHS source used for the DC that is.

Knowing Mann, it wouldn’t surprise me if he used some AI-assisted upscaling from a poor source. Insane to keep tinkering with something that was just about perfect in 1986

As a sort-of aside, I’ve been thinking about Kim Greist. Did Mann like working with her? She seemed to be on the cusp of getting big in the mid-80’s, but things died after Homeward Bound ‘93 and that Sinbad/Phil Hartmann comedy
