I'll go to bat for "All Through the Night..." at the very least, it's a really fun movie with a crowd. First saw it at a little college Bogart retrospective with a few dozen people in attendance, and it played like gangbusters. It just moves SO fast, and the cameraderie onscreen is infectious. And it held up on a home rewatch years later. It may not be a pinnacle of studio filmmaking, but it nevertheless feels like a quintessential studio film.

I've always loved the fact that Warners sees fit to include a commentary on the release by a critic (who I've never heard of before or since) who Steve Martin, in the other on-disc extra that isn't the trailer, openly mocks for being (according to Steve Martin) a weird, maladroit loser.

He’s still a film critic and seemingly one of the few around to still earn a living doing it

I know there’s a following for Auntie Mame (doesn’t it air every Christmas on TCM?) but I’m amazed that someone who gets paid much more than me thought that would sell better than, say, a UHD for the Bad Seed (which I don’t even like, just saying from a business perspective)

It’s screened multiple times every holiday season at the American Cinematheque and typically sells out. I get the camp appeal, but it’s not something I would ever feel a compulsion to own or watch again

I think Auntie Mane is a definite TCM classic which is the same audience WAC caters to, but also imagine that the virtue of it being a 12k Technicolor restoration really is what put the thumb on the scale of this is the kind of thing the format should be used for.

As someone who has owned Auntie Mame on every format (including VHS and laserdisc), even I’m not really sure I need to own this. It’s one of the movies that got me into classic movies thanks to it being aired regularly on AMC (panned and scanned, naturally). But it is on TCM all the time now, too.

It does have some gorgeous color and should look fantastic in 4K, but The Bad Seed would probably definitely outsell it.

Slight correction to Ribs’ comment: this is not a Technicolor film. It’s just standard Warnercolor monopack (albeit with color processing and prints done by Technicolor). Technirama was Technicolor’s proprietary widescreen process which has the film running horizontally, like VistaVision, and uses anamorphic lenses, like CinemaScope. Spartacus was shot in the same process. But the point stands that this film will benefit from the increased resolution in scanning and presentation.

By what was announced today it seems like WAC are tackling the later Fords as the elements are most likely in better shape. But hopefully we''ll get the 30s Fords at some point. I do think The Informer has a shot to get released by Criterion. As for Long Voyage Home Janus has the rights but as per an email answer I got from CC they don't have plans to release it

I saw The Bad Seed (and Village Of The Damned) as a kid and loved them but upon revisiting in college found them a bit contrived and annoying despite a clever idea underlying them and have always felt they would have worked better as Twilight Episodes rather than feature length films and have never bought them on disc. On the other hand, I didn't discover Auntie Mame until after college and found it immensibly enjoyable. It's one of 2 films where I found Rosalind Russell's spitfire delivery of her lines to work for the benefit of the character and film's plot (the other being The Women), whereas in the others (including His Girl Friday) I've just found it annoying. Auntie Mame is a gay/camp classic which (along with The Women) would fill up The Castro theater if announced (where I've first seen both) with an audience that laughs so much you often miss some of the dialogue (and hence need a copy for home viewing). I've bought both in every format and will upgrade as soon as they're available in UHD.

This is on the Criterion Channel with a Janus Films logo. No idea what the rights situation is. It was shot on the RKO sets with RKO producers and RKO contract crew (like Van Nest Polglase as art director and Hugh McDowell Jr. on sound). And it doesn't appear to be public domain.
