The inimitable filmmaker Mike Leigh’s affection for spirited, irrepressible figures whom society too often overlooks shines through every frame of this wonderfully tender, bittersweet ode to female friendship and hard-won inner growth. Born out of the singularly collaborative, improvisational rehearsal methods that give Leigh’s characters their multidimensional richness and unforgettable spark, Career Girls features vividly idiosyncratic performances from Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman as former roommates who reunite in London six years after striking out on their own. Over the course of a weekend full of laughter, tears, memories, and chance encounters, they confront what it means to revisit the past—in the form of both wounds that haven’t fully healed and bonds that can never be broken.

Re: 1343 Career Girls
This is one of my preferred Mike Leighs, maybe because it reminds me a lot of my student years in London.
It's his only step away from hard reality? With the convergence of coincidental reunions?
I really like the Andy Serkis bit, a little breakdown of that male trait that has come up so often in the news since then - success leading to an expectation of rewards from nearby women.

Re: 1343 Career Girls
Damn, I think I’m the only person here to ever guess this one getting a release.
Katrin Cartlidge’s performance is extremely polarizing, but I’ve always felt that it is one of THE most authentic to appear in a film from a director who is always acclaimed for their verisimilitude.
This film has one of the funniest moments his films, as Cartlidge and Steadman, when catching up in 1996, discuss how they no longer care for The Cure while a wall plastered with advertisements for their single “The 13th” is behind them.

wish there was a little more to the release but considering the UK one is apparently OOP and this has a newer restoration, I am glad to support any Leigh. one of my favorite directors

Happy-Go-Lucky is also a departure, so much so that many who love his miserabilism despise it intensively.
