RaroVideo US's restored version of Fellini's The Clowns, one of the director's final masterpieces will arrive on DVD for the first time ever in the US on February 22. The DVD extras contain a rare and exclusive short film by Fellini, a video essay on the genesis of the film

I worked a little on this video essay by Adriano Aprà, and even if I have seen only a rough cut I think it will be very interesting.

Has the Blu-ray been dropped? DVDAf now only lists the DVD. I couldn't find it on Amazon either, but I can't remember if they listed it before.

I'm insanely coulrophobic, but my love of Fellini trumps that. Though that makes this the one time I wish there was a dub. I can't imagine how much of the film will be watched through my fingers.

Another Clowns review.

There are just two bonus features on the disc, but they are major ones. First up is "Fellini's Circus" (42:20), an all-new "video essay" on the film by historian Adriano Aprà. This is quite the retrospective! Colorful charts deconstruct the film by shot length, distance, and motion. Fellini's own words and illustrations from Renzo Renzi's companion book to the film are shared, as is much information on the production, its subject matter, and its place in Fellini's career.

Has anyone seen The Perfume of the Lady in Black? It'll be released next week, but I know little of it outside of the Mimsy Farmer article in Video Watchdog. Is it any good?

I'd recommend it. Relatively restrained compared to many other 70s Italo-genre outings, but beautifully shot little mystery taking its cue from Rosemary's Baby and Don't Look Now with Mimsy Farmer aiming for Oscar hour.

The earlier (English friendly) Italian Raro-disc was one of their best releases, so if this is any indication, I'd expect a pretty stellar release.

anyone know whether there's any point upgrading from the Italian release? The press release mentioned a new transfer and improved (I think) English subtitle translation, but the handful of reviews have made no mention of these points.

Yeah, it's too bad Raro couldn't have informed me of a potential blu-ray release within the same year as their DVD release before I bought the damn thing!

Watched Raro USA's new release of Live like a cop,die like a man.I mainly collect the soundtracks for Italian police films(Morricone,Franco Micalizzi,Armando Trovajoli etc.brilliant stuff!For newcomer I'd recommend a compilation called Beretta 70 but beware,you might get hooked!!)as movies themselves are usually pretty disgusting and this is a particularly nasty example.Pauline Kael famously called Dirty Harry a "fascist" movie and I wonder what she would have said about this film which openly champions police brutality,in fact in one scene two "heroes" kill the suspects before they have time to commit an actual crime!Opening motorcycle chase scene(shot on the streets of Rome without permission)is effective but otherwise this is flatly directed(by Ruggero Deodato,responsible for notorious Cannibal holocaust and House on the edge of park),there's no tension whatsoever.If you are looking for character development you won't find it here and english dubbing is awful as usual(it's amusing when you watch enough italian genre films you realise that same people were used for dubbing over and over again.)Raro's dvd is very good quality and for those who are interested in these type of films(anyone here?)there's a rumor that this is coming to blu-ray sooner or later...

Saturday 3rd September, 06.30pm, at digital expo area of 68th Venice Film Festival, there will be the third “RaroDay-Italia” meeting, expected appointment for our friend , fond of Cinema, who have honored us with their constant attention for years. RaroVideo’s staff, in the presence of the publishers and the producers Gianluca & Stefano Curti, the reviewer Bruno Di Marino and other surprise guests, will meet all fans of visual art world in order to discuss about the present state and future publishing proposal of RAROVIDEO Italy.
During the meeting, it will be introduced the schedule of the second semester 2011 and upcoming publications 2012.
It will be shown in world premiere the publishing project regarding “IL CONFORMISTA”, masterpiece by Bernardo Bertolucci, who has been awarded the Palme d' Honneur at Cannes last May. The movie has been restored in HD from original negative 35 mm, by Minerva-RaroVideo group in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna.
Then, will be presented:
- the collection of the first movies of Mathieu Kassowitz, by Boris Sollazzo: “HATE”, “METISSE”, “ASSASSINS”
- two works by Abel Ferrara: unpublished “NAPOLI NAPOLI NAPOLI”, introduced in official section of Venice 2009 and the restored version of “IL CATTIVO TENENTE”, with Harvey Keitel.
- the documentary “ALL’ARMI SIAM FASCISTI”, by Lino Del Fra, Cecilia Mangini and Lino Micciché, of which applies the 50th anniversary of Venetian presentation in 1961.
The debate will enhance with introduction of “Là-Bas”, the fiction about Castelvolturno’s massacre, directed by Guido Lombardi and produced by Minerva and Figli del Bronx, chosen for International Critic’s week. The screening’s dates are to be defined.
After the meeting, in homage of Marco Bellocchio, who will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, will be screened the movie “SBATTI IL MOSTRO IN PRIMA PAGINA”, next remarkable and exclusive RaroVideo publication.

Sunday 4th September, 06.30pm, at digital expo area of 68th Venice Film Festival there will be the first presentation of RAROVIDEO USA project, during the exclusive RaroDay USA. The film publishers Stefano e Gianluca Curti, and the ideator Enrico Ghezzi, will show the publishing projects thanks to whom the visual art world and European Cinema are and will be proposed and disseminated in North America. It will be introduced preview schedule of the next publications until April 2012.
Then, there will be the screening of “ADUA AND HER FRIENDS-ADUA E LE COMPAGNE”, by Antonio Pietrangeli, in original version with English subtitles, restored in HD by RAROVIDEO, made with a new exclusive transfer from original negative 35mm.

If you are interested in Italian post-neorealist cinema this is a must have, a comedy with fantasy elements. Inspired by Gogol's story, it's much better than Aleksey Batalov's 1960 adaptation.
