I asked him specifically about Limite (quite honestly, the only Latin movie I know besides Black Orpheus, which doesn't count) and his response was "it's up to them!"

take that for what it's worth.
Thank you. Hope this means more than just Limite, maybe some Glauber Rocha and Joaquim Pedro de Andrade.

It wasn't Robert Stam was it?
holy shit now that I think about it, it might've been now that I think about his voice. which makes me mad because I didn't thank him for his Contempt commentary.

if you are who I think you are, i should've told you immediately about this, especially if it was Rocha, who i totally blanked on asking about

I really feel like they couldn't dump the WCF movies on Eclipse with how much restoration they did on those movies. it'd be like putting Lonesome or the War Trilogy on Eclipse. they did puzzle with the Downeys and the Czech movies but whatever. I definitely feel like we'll see Limite or something soon. he did say whatever he worked on was "coming soon"

If it's Stam, I can't wait to see what he has been helping with (Macunaima for one).

And no problem, as long as you gave this news, all I could want. Thanks again.

Criterion Cast posted on twitter that they got confirmation from Edward Yang's widow that Criterion are working on A Brighter Summer Day.

And, you beat me to it. They also wrote about it on their website.

I was lucky enough to see this at a special screening some months ago and absolutely loved it. Between this and Yi Yi, Edward Yang has become one of my favorite directors. I'm very excited over this release, and am interested in checking out Yang's other films.

So couple this with the info Ryan Nichols just gave us about a South American film being released... then it looks like that WCF set is coming at last.

I am hoping for individual releases. It doesn't make much sense to dump all these films into one very expensive box set. The films don't have anything in common with each other besides being restored by Scorsese's nonprofit company. Would be kind of a random box.

gonna agree with this. i know initially the press release said "boxsets" but I don't think that's how they'll ultimately be released. if they want people to buy them, I don't think it's the way to go

regardless as long as we know they're coming on Bluray i'll buy them however.

Carlotta are releasing them as box sets in France. Here's the first set. And here's a review of the upcoming second set. They are DVD only and don't appear to be English friendly. Not sure what that may mean for a Region 1/A release.

well, it was confirmed that A Brighter Summer Day will be on Bluray, so I'm not sure what that means either.

Of course, A Brighter Summer Day isn't in either set and Yang is already in the collection with a Blu-ray release of Yi-Yi. One could argue that Yang's films are probably better known to a larger segment of Criterion's customer base than the films in the Carlotta boxes. It seems much more likely to me that the Carlotta sets will turn into Eclipse releases (like the Shimizu set, for example) than individual BD releases of each film.

what about the apparent supplements for the Latin American films?

this is all fun speculation but I really feel like they won't put these big restorations on Eclipse. barebones Bluray releases, maybe.

Kent Jones said in an interview that he and Criterion were working on a WCF boxset when all this speculation began... the quote is somewhere in this forum. Plus, Criterion on Facebook replied to a question regarding when the boxset would be coming by saying there were problems which had delayed things (not on their end). So initially anyway, this was being worked on as a set and Ryan's info about the Latin American extras seem to support this as possibly still being the case.

Just saw the Richard III DCP restoration yesterday and it was stunning, so I don't think the Olivier pictures are going to be buried in Eclipse. A 3-picture Blu-ray box is more likely.

Richard III isn't Korda. I assume such a set would feature stuff like 21 Days and The Divorce of Lady X. Though I would love for the later to get on Blu.

FWIW, some guy on Facebook is saying that an unnamed guy at CIFF told him that the Étaix Eclipse set is being announced today.

Did we know about the Hitchcock before? Either way I'll be glad to drop my old disc especially with the Truffaut interview (even though I wish they would just put the whole thing there).

I don't think there ever was anything outright confirmed, but it's one of those titles I kinda expected at some point for years.

Somebody had mentioned (I think on Facebook) that Criterion replied to them a few months ago confirming they were working on it.

Any time Criterion echoes MoC I get optimistic we'll see 'Touch of Evil' and 'Repo Man' in R1..

Great to see more Tarkovsky creep onto blu.. Who has 'Stalker'??
