The feeling I get from this is that there is not one or a couple of main characters to focus on. Between the three stories within the narrative, and all of the major actors in prominent roles here, this feels like it could be Anderson's most complex mosaic yet. That's not a complaint necessarily, especially with the cast involved. I'm just very interested to see how this comes off.

Same, and I'm predicting it'll be more layered beyond transitioning between stories but to a present-day connective tissue as well given the color and appearance differences amongst the characters in the trailer, which could in turn result in a cohesive blend of simultaneous character development that may not be as feasible in a chapter book narrative.

The release date is now October 16th. (I was kind of hoping to watch this from home in the summer...)

What a pity. I think we could all do with some Wes Anderson right now! (Although it will be nice to see it in the cinema whenever regular human life becomes a thing again.)

I guess Fox figures Cannes isn’t happening and wants to be able to premiere this at one of the fall festivals instead?

COVID-19 is a conspiracy to finally push a Wes Anderson film to come out closer to awards season

It might clean up at the oscars or at least win him screenplay with all these movies pushed. Though I think it would have anyways.

I think Cannes could still happen, but it would be after the original release date... if the fall festivals do happen, I selfishly hope it makes it to Telluride, as a premiere or otherwise.

Knowing what some of his movies did per theater in the last decade, the French Dispatch might be able to save some independent movie theaters (hope it isn't too late by then).

If this somehow never makes it to wide theatrical release, it'll be the first Wes Anderson film I'll have missed in theaters since Bottle Rocket nearly 25 years ago (gasp!). Going to see this would be a good way to inauguarate a post-quarantine situation, but I'm skeptical we'll be at that point even in October.

If Tenet’s date gets moved, that’s when you know the quarantine won’t be over this summer

Alexandre Desplat on The French Dispatch in Indiewire:
From Desplat’s perspective, “The French Dispatch” is also the most ambitious thing that Anderson has ever done. “Maybe even bigger than ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’” he said. “More stories, different locations, and so many ideas in every shot. So many! Wes’ brain is going so fast.” Desplat said that he found the script to be Dadaist in its construction, referencing the avant-garde art movement of the early 20th century that rejected logic, reason, aesthetic uniformity, not to mention pretty much everything else that Wes Anderson holds sacred. “Though the film is not at all set in that time period, the vibe is very Dadaist,” Desplat said. “The movement started in Switzerland but it blossomed in France very quickly, and to go back to it meant that I had Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, and a great deal of music that I could refer to in order to make sure that we were in the zone of that Dadaist mood.”

I think this is the first time anyone has ever associated Claude Debussy with Dadaist art.

He and Satie were close friends, and you could argue that he was influential in the developments that led to Dada, but yeah, calling his music itself Dadaist is a bit of a stretch.

Wait, wasn't Mothersbaugh composing this one? I must have missed that news.

It's hard to imagine aesthetics farther apart than those of Wes Anderson and Dada, so unless the former has taken a major detour, I suspect that Desplat quote is mostly doggerel.

This remains technically correct and yet, the tone of hectoring reassurance has not dated well.

Pushed to 2021 - I heard some burbles that I cannot verify that the plan is to have it play Cannes in 2021 like they wanted it to in 2020 and then come out pretty much the same time next year that it was supposed to be released this year

The difference is that the Nolan movie can clean up in non-North American markets and probably still break even.

This a curious choice. What movies are going to compete for year end attention this year? Almost nothing worthwhile seems to be out except let's say the Spike Lee.

I thought some directors might think they have a better shot this year and try to get their movie out but seems like a no.

It's almost like awards aren't important when something like a global pandemic is going on
