Forget it, Jake. It's Vinegar Syndrome.

Don't worry, it's one of their lines with a slipbox on top of a slipcase on top of a slipcover, you can throw away this one and still have plenty of cardboard left.

A fitting typo, given the quality of the film.

Other than the typo it’s a far better cover design than the original release version.

One of the great American films of the 1990s, according to Jacques Rivette.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but it's seriously underrated.

Oh I agree. The back of the slip is good too, just, you probably should double check how to spell the director's name before finalizing a cover.

I thought Showgirls had by now been critically thoroughly rehabilitated. Or do I just live in a gay bubble? There's even a book and a documentary about how misunderstood the film was and that its a satirical masterpiece. Good or bad, I think it's one of the most entertaining movies of all time.

Yes, it has been drastically overcorrected. I don’t think this is a film in need of defenses anymore (and I certainly have none to offer it at any rate), and while I think Rivette’s quote in regards to this film is one of the most self-aware bon mots to ever emerge from film criticism at-large (“The best film ever made about Vegas— take it from me, who’s never been there” or something to that effect) I don’t think he’s responsible for any of its current rehabilitation. Though I’d love to see other oddball films he championed get this treatment— where’s our Rocky Horror take on Fear Strikes Out

I believe that’s the old DVD cover and, yes, it’s atrocious.

In which John Wayne hunts down the bandit who carved a chunk out of Sophia Loren’s head, leaving her unable to support it and needing to rest it on the brim of his stetson.

The image appears to be based on a production still that was used for VHS and DVD covers. It didn't look as weird then. Shushing it up with AI, however, has given it an uncanny quality.

I assumed this was a Western, but this from Kim Newman has me quite fancying it: “If the film is watchable, it’s for Jack Cardiff’s desert vistas, with winds riffling sands in Techniscope, and the eerie views of the abandoned Roman city in the middle of ‘three thousand years of sand’.”

For what it’s worth, it’s also one of the few Henry Hathaway films that the Cahiers du cinema gang warmed up to (the others being Niagara and North to Alaska).

Well, I believe Hitchcock robbed Niagara blind for Vertigo, so I’m even more in.

Legend of the Lost does turn up on Film4 every so often, so keep an eye out for it being tucked away in the daytime schedules reaky!

Any means of seeing it without giving house space to that grotesque cover is welcome!

Caligula II? Did he rise from the dead? Or was there a last-minute switch of someone in a Mission Impossible-style rubber mask?

Someone needed a spellchecker... I love the switching of the quotation marks!
