Is A Nos Amours a likely upgrade? Gaumont BD is available, but I have no idea how popular a title this is for Criterion.

Holy shit, this is an impressive month.

I will most definitely be upgrading my DVD of Rififi to Blu-Ray, a favorite of mine that I haven't seen in ages. Thief is a definite blind buy. I may also pick up It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (I know, I personally like the film; then again, I was quite young when I saw it, so it will be interesting to see if it holds up, at all).

The others I will be renting before I consider purchasing them.

As great as this month is, with Throne of Blood and Riffi upgrades and with Thief, I'm a little disappointed that The Long Day Closes is Criterion's first Davies. Not that it isn't amazing and I'll be first in line to pick it up, but why wouldn't they start with Distant Voices, Still Lives? Does that title need more restoration work for HD? Anyone in the U.K. like Michael have an idea?

Best month ever, as far as I'm concerned. Ray, Kaurismaki, Davies, Kurosawa, my favorite Mann, Rififi. Holy shitballs.

Thrilled with January, and delighted that they're doing THE LONG DAY CLOSES first as it's my favourite Davies by a long shot. RIFIFI is great news for anyone who doesn't already have Arrow's fantastic disc. Pleased with THRONE OF BLOOD being the next Kurosawa on their list but did anyone else notice that according to the film's page, it's meant to have a new cover? Will blind-buy La VIE DE BOHEME and quite likely THIEF as well.

five posts since the announcement and no rending of garments and gnashing of teeth of Ray being windowboxed DVD only?

We're slipping, Criterion forum.

They delayed Following to more-or-less coincide with the BD release of The Dark Knight Rises, maybe Y Tu Mama Tambien will be released around the time Gravity is out on disc.

Every page says "New cover by" now to indicate who designed the cover. They aren't changing the cover for Throne of Blood. (Or at least, they'd better not!)

thank GOD for another Aki Kaurismäki release! these are impossible to find (well, bittorrent, but who wouldn't want a criterion release of them). Matti is so awesome!

Definitely upgrading Throne of Blood, will finally be able to pick up Rififi, Mad World will be excellent for the bonus content alone (and i do like the film, too), and the others are films that I will need to check out. The only one I'm not in for is Thief because I just didn't like it enough to own, but it looks like a great release for its fans.

I wonder what BD release they're delaying A Brighter Summer Day for.

I would be interested to know this as well.

For curiosity's sake, I searched for the thread where Y Tu Mamá También was first revealed to be on the way, over four years ago, and found this post from September 2009:

Probably a case of rights holder. The Long Day Closes is IFC, but I think the others are with Strand or New Yorker.

Long Day Closes probably uses the BFI edition's commentary.

There's definitely an HD transfer available. I believe it was done under Davies' supervision around the same time as the one for The Long Day Closes for the BFI releases so it shouldn't need any more work.

I'd posit that the BFI is releasing Distant Voices on Blu some time in the future. As a result of such an enterprise very likely being region free, might Criterion decide to just pass on it?

I can't speak to Criterion's interest or ability to pick up any given title, but I'm almost certain that a region-free release in another country has no bearing on their decision to do so. North American retailers don't stock foreign releases, and despite what a sampling of this forum would have you believe, the percentage of customers who import foreign discs is insignificant.
