Le Samourai and The Kid share a window too. That chick ain't from Repo Man.bainbridgezu wrote:True, but I was just watching Repo Man the other day, and there aren't any characters that look like this. It's almost certainly a double clue (which they've only ever given on New Year's).

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Even with my Hulu subscription, I've yet to see the film. However, a quick Google image search of "Oshima Boy" yields a NYT still of kids sitting a snow, so I'm inclined to think that you're right.Calvin wrote:Oshima's Boy, perhaps?bamwc2 wrote:I think that the board has probably gotten all of them so far except for the grumpy looking kid to the upper left of Eraser Head with snow (?) coming down around him. Any ideas, because I'm stumped?

So the only one we haven't (mostly) solved is the apartment building. Are they released Towering Inferno?

I doubt this is likely, especially considering the combination of the music notes and leaves is already assumed to be Autumn Sonata, but is there also a chance that the music notes could represent Mahler by Ken Russell? The film has been on their Hulu page for quite some time now.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The boy sharing a window with Le samourai is definitely Chaplin's The Kid, the hat are scarf are an exact match.
That said, I wonder if the figure in the snowy room is for Oshima's Boy. Though I like the Shivers idea better, and the snow could be a double-clue for The Brood (the "children's" snow-suits).
Edit: Cliff MacMillan of Shout Factory says "Somerville house owns Rabid and Lionsgate has Shivers. Scanners and The Brood are owned by the producer and were licensed out to a label."
Which means that Shivers is very, very unlikely (though not entirely impossible: Kicking and Screaming and Naqoyqatsi were from Lionsgate), but that Criterion almost certainly has The Brood as well as Scanners.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I'm a little skeptical that it there's as anything more than a device to showcase all of the characters in a convenient way (plus it gets Harold Lloyd at the top story, even though the building in Safety Last was an office building and not an apartment). Perhaps the nine stories might represent the underrated and OOP Nine Songs, though that seems like a bit of a stretch. The Narrator Returns wrote:So the only one we haven't (mostly) solved is the apartment building. Oshima's Boy would really be something. The building = 9 stories = Short Cuts blu-ray?

Kind of just working off the theme of the apartment building, but the candy-eating woman looks an awful lot like Polanski in drag from The Tenant

Instead of La Strada, could the clown/mime represent a Pierre Etaix eclipse set? Didn't they recently acquire the rights to many of his films, and while I haven't seen them, supposedly one of them involves a mime or something to that effect...

I don't know. The snow-room kid does look kind of Asian to me.bainbridgezu wrote:The boy sharing a window with Le samourai is definitely Chaplin's The Kid, the hat are scarf are an exact match.

Maybe I missed it, but who is the guy (singing?) on the 6th floor?
I just rewatched La Strada last week and I don't think the tightrope guy is the fool. Is there no other movie with a high wire act, maybe one in which the performer looks more like the drawing? I feel like they would have had the guy eating spaghetti or something if it was La Strada, unless it's a double clue with something I've not seen.

Also, I'm choosing to believe the entire clue is a meta clue rpresentative of The Decalogue, as that film constitutes the tales of a variety of characters inhabiting the same Polish apartment complex.

Someone on CriterionCast suggested that the clown on the tight rope is Pierre Etaix.

It looks an awful lot like Giulietta Masina in the film. Again, it's been years since I've seen it, but doesn't she try & fail the tight rope in one scene?Sam T. wrote:Maybe I missed it, but who is the guy (singing?) on the 6th floor?

Then Piere Etaix it is. I assume we'll be getting an Eclipse Set of his films...Jeff wrote:It is indeed Yo Yo.

Actually, I'd say she looks more like Adjani in The Tenant (especially the glasses, which Polanski's character never wore).Jgh8xxx wrote:Kind of just working off the theme of the apartment building, but the candy-eating woman looks an awful lot like Polanski in drag from The Tenant

Considering all of the talk about The Tenant, Criterion Cast suggests that the building itself is a hint for the film...

hopefully Pierre Etaix will be on the mainline, as he's been hinted at/discussed far too much to be dumped on Eclipse.
someone thinks the "Boy" in the window kind of looks like Giulietta Masina from Juliet of the Spirits. as it's one of the few Fellini's i've never seen, can anyone vouch?
the devil is carrying the conch from Lord of the Flies!
