The 1990s List: Discussion and Suggestions

I don't know if I'll make room to rescue it yet, but La Fille sur le pont is a delightful concoction of poetic realism and nouvelle vague traits, transfused into a wild story that engages with alienation and energetic connection in unpredictable and disruptive patterns. I didn't care much for Leconte's famous Le Mari de la coiffeuse, but this was a real treasure - a rare film that gets better as it progresses due to unexpected grace notes in narrative pivots and magical realism. The ending is predictable but forgivable in favor of its commitment to whiplashing style and eccentric existentialism

I'm a bit surprised at some of my orphans. Yes, very mainstream, but still worthy of consideration.

Fight Club: it's been overplayed and overquoted to the point of --, but don't let that fool you. The story and direction is engrossing and still a fun watch after all these years.
Gattaca: our protagonist is destined to become a nobody except he refuses to be resigned to his fate (he eventually gets an accomplice). imagine if the old couple in Make Way for Tomorrow still had to live 60 more years and didn't want to die without doing something (sort of).
The Matrix: disregard the franchise. the original film is still a pretty good sci-fi action flick. Yes you know the story, except when rewatching it you still get a rush because it's the little things that you didn't remember that attract your attention. This could have been the equivalent of today's mundane superhero film, but it's much more.
As Good as It Gets: I don't think Nicholson has ever had a more perfect role. Brooks has the audience teetering between 2nd hand embarrassment and laughter the whole way.
Heat: Hell of a role for Pacino and everyone else casted in this film (and there's quite a cast). It's a film of our modern day crises wrapped in a heist flick.
Men in Black: I don't think anyone really figured out the comic book-to-film adaptation until the original Men in Black. Tommy Lee Jones is the perfect old timer to Will Smith who is perfect as his foil. The comedy is actually funny and it's big budget movie making that actually turns out something fresh and fun.

The Sunchaser is a fairly poignant way to end a career even if the world had every opportunity to make that not the case. Not just as a road trip, but also as a love letter to homosocial relations and the concept of balance this plays as a bookend with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

Cimino paints an effecting portrait of reality and the beyond intertwined as the vehicle for purpose. I can understand why this kind of high melodrama when fused to the kitschy of ‘90s grit doesn’t really work in this ironic age, but sappy me was touched by the metaphoric presentation which is fairly consistent across all of his films I’ve seen.

I've been meaning to highlight Belfast, Maine all month and here we are on 30 January with one day til submission.

If you've watched a Wiseman film before you'll know more or less what you're getting, but of the 12 features I've seen I'd put it right at the top. Perhaps it's enough to say that the sequence from the Death of a Salesman rehearsal through to the English class on Moby Dick - encompassing, among other things, the social worker visiting the man in the trailer, the Civil War talk, the sardine factory workers (whose bandaged hands move so quickly you'd swear the footage has been sped up), and the county court hearings - is virtually unrivalled in its portrayal of the disparate parts that make up a community.

It's also in this section, which admittedly is almost half the film, that Wiseman's thesis really comes together. The decision to cut from Miller to the coyote trapping is clear enough, likewise the Moby Dick commentary. The MBNA offices right at the end are clearly a pointed contrast with the other types of labour we see. What struck me most though was the number of care workers and the like. In many ways it's they who seem the lifeblood of the town, not least because teenagers or young adults appear virtually non-existent. You do fear that those support systems are far weaker 25+ years later (our ageing society means some of these jobs may be returning - it's probably notable that the US 'health care and social assistance' sector is one of the few to have added jobs over the past year - but I wonder how support per capita compares).

Every scene is prefaced by the traditional establishing shot of the location in question, but it's notable that there's also a bookend: that same shot repeated at the end of each encounter. Wiseman also does this in Monrovia, Indiana, perhaps to confirm the similarities between the two, but I can't recall it in others I've seen. Notwithstanding this is clearly a film of content more than form, it began to feel almost reminscent of structural film after a while. Said structure may not call attention to itself, but it does emphasise the very careful ordering of scenes and episodes.

In short, a great way to spend 4 hours of your Friday or Saturday this weekend.
