Love The Scarlet Letter! The Wind and the case are good as well, but that cover is just as striking as some of Criterion's best. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see the film yet, so I have no idea how appropriate it is to the tone of Sjostrom's work. Not sure about the text, though.

Thanks! The Wind is an excellent film, so if you ever get the chance to see it, by all means do. I believe Warner holds the rights to these films, which means the prospect of a Criterion release is only a fantasy. Hopefully they will release both movies soon with some worthy features.
Yeah, the text is pretty bland here. I was concentrating on the design and didn't put a whole lot of effort into the font. Maybe I'll update it one day.

Perhaps though, the title of the film should be as big as, and in the place of Lillian Gish's name. A different font and a background with more texture would certainly help too. It would be really awesome if the crossing frames were more ornate, perhaps even in the pattern of Gish's dress in each cover!
Thanks for the feedback. I personally like the empty space on the box cover, but I do agree about the font and backgrounds on the individual covers. Unfortunately, I have no major Photoshop skills ... in fact, I don't have Photoshop. Believe it or not, I made these using PowerPoint! I may try to improve these at some point.

Out of curiosity, where did you get those original images? I have suddenly become uncontrollably curious about what the covers would look like with some tweaking. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, and I promise I won't suddenly become a total jackass and steal your ideas or anything.

I got the movie photos from this website, a great resource for classic film stills
I just did a Google image search for the Sjostrom photo and found it here
Oh, and you can totally rework the covers as you see fit. I would actually like to see what you can do with them.
A few more covers... I'm cutting corners with the template, but that's because I'm lazy. (I was also apparently too lazy to put a hyphen between 'Anne' and 'Marie')
Huh. Beautiful covers. Just noticed: If you take the graphic elelment in the lower right quadrant of Scarlet Letter and 'fill' the graphic void in the lower right quandrant of The Wind...hmmmm....was that intentional?

Hmmmm, indeed. I can assure you that was not intentional, but it is a clever observation.
Klaylock is currently working on more elaborate designs for these titles, by the way. We both agreed that mine were a bit plain, although I like my box cover as it is.
Just a speculation of what the new packages may look like, not necessarily what I want them to look like...
The middle right segment could almost be worked up into a cover on its own. In any case, it is much better than Koch Lorber's recent tilty-text cover, which even had a swimminghorses style spelling mistake in the original version on Amazon (eventually corrected).
Thanks for the kind words on the Gai Savoir cover. Visually, I tend to think it's a little too busy; I'll try to work on it a bit more when I have time. I've got a cover for Pialat's Van Gogh and one for Amerian Splendor on the way...
