Mr. Becker’s talents embodied the Janus logo’s twin goals — for example, when he negotiated with the French filmmaker Jacques Tati, who was over budget on a film and had gone into bankruptcy and lost all his titles to his lenders.

“We put up the final $25,000 that enabled him to get control of his films back from the banks,” Mr. Becker said.

I think we likely have a good explanation here for the Tati family loyalty to Janus / Criterion over and above their StudioCanal deal.

Marcin Wrona, one of the more promising of the younger generation of Polish filmmakers, seems to have committed suicide last Friday night - bafflingly, as his third feature Demon had just premiered locally to some of the best reviews of his career and looked set to make a genuine international splash.

Daniel Bird, who knew him well during his creatively formative years, has written a heartfelt obituary.
