The Serpent and the Rainbow specs:
After a couple of street date delays, we can finally share with you more concrete news about our upcoming Blu-ray release of Wes Craven’s underrated and thought-provoking voodoo film. We thank you for being patient.

This of course is a bittersweet release for us due to the passing of Mr. Craven (who we still mourn). Originally, Craven was set to be involved in the project and the title was scheduled for Aug of last year. This had to be pushed back because of reasons we now all know.

We were then set for its new street date in Jan. However, when we saw the HD transfer that was provided to us, we were not satisfied and felt strongly that our release deserved better (it being our last Craven film). Therefore, we moved the date to 2/23 so that we could create an all-new HD transfer from the inter-positive film element. SERPENT has never looked better and we hope you will agree.

We also have some great extras lined-up which include:

• NEW audio commentary with actor Bill Pullman
• NEW The Making of The Serpent and the Rainbow featuring new interviews with actor Bill Pullman, author Wade Davis, director of photography John Lindley and special makeup effects artists Lance Anderson and David Anderson
• Original Theatrical Trailer and TV Spot
• Still Gallery

William Castle's I Saw What You Did gets a Blu-ray release on May 17th. No news on special features, but expect those from the long OOP Anchor Bay DVD release to be ported over.

Fantastic, this is one of my favorite Castle films! It's one of his least gimmicky works, features Joan Crawford chewing up the scenery in a ridiculous choker necklace that deserves its own billing, verges on an almost Lynchian exploration of a clean-cut American girl's perverse desires, and has the best Psycho shower scene ripoff I've yet encountered.

Manhunter coming out May 24th. Good news is that Michael Mann is directly involved with this release, which should come as no surprise since he's done the same for every release of his so far.

Good news or bad news? Mann's "director's cuts" are typically worse than the theatrical cuts, and he approved the radically revisionist color timing of Criterion's release of Thief. This is one of those cases where I might prefer the director to stay out of the release of his older films.

Edit: Or newer films! The "director's cut" of Miami Vice lacks among other things the theatrical version's splendid cold open, but it's the only version on Blu-Ray in the US (no doubt due to Mann's insistence). Like Terrence Malick, it seems that Mann just cannot stop tinkering with his films, and not always (or ever?) to their benefit.

The theatrical version already had a very nice bd release, so he can't really ruin anything luckily.

So unless Mann adds yet another VHS sourced cut, to make a grand total of something like 7 officially released versions, there is nothing new here.

Something compelled me to order Shout Factory's DVD set of Gordon's War and Off Limits, if only for Gordon's War. I haven't watched the film in ages, and of course, I've never seen it in widescreen before the Shout Factory release. Cotton Comes to Harlem, Ossie Davis' earlier directorial effort, is a film I really like, but it has a gloss to it that is a little more Hollywood than later blaxploitation films. Gordon's War looks a whole lot cheaper, and acts a whole lot rougher. It's a really bleak film, where Vietnam vets go to war against Harlem drug dealers, and I wondered if, in retrospect, it wasn't inspired by the Black Panther Party's urban policing in the era. Of course, Gordon's War is a lot more Hollywood-ized than that. Still, quite interesting. Paul Winfield is pretty awesome in the film, as always, but it's also one of his rare leading roles. What comes through more than anything, though, is the phenomenally rough, harsh tone of the film. The settings, the shooting galleries, abandoned buildings, and squalid tenements, seem very real, and extraordinarily depressing. The contrast between the very genuine–seeming, desolate surroundings and the ham–fisted, soldiers vs. mob plot is really fractious and disturbing.

We're thrilled to announce that Brian DePalma's underrated thriller RAISING CAIN (starring the ever so talented John Lithgow) will be getting the "Collector's Edition" Blu-ray treatment! Street date is June 28th.

Extras will be announced sometime in Late April. The newly-designed front-facing artwork you see here is final (not pictured is the reverse wrap image which will showcase the original theatrical poster art.)

**NEW TITLE ANNOUNCE**

Romantic obsession has harrowing consequences in 1993's THE CRUSH--which is coming to Blu-ray for the first time on June 21!

This suspenseful stalker-from-hell thriller stars Cary Elwes (Saw), Jennifer Rubin (Bad Dreams) and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, The Babysitter) in her first feature film role. Extras will be announced sometime later on in the Spring.

The Crush is an absolute piece of trash, and I love it just enough to consider a blu upgrade. Delightfully stupid and sleazy.
