I’d love to get some Bigas Luna. Golden Balls has never had a halfway decent home video presentation

4K UHD disc would be great. I picked up Olive's Blu-ray not too long ago, which is serviceable, but a new transfer and some special features would be much appreciated. It is a hilariously melodramatic telenovela in the form of a feature film.dwk wrote: Wed Apr 23, 2025 12:36 am I dont think this has been mentioned, over on the Channel, Jamón jamón opens with the Criterion and Janus Films logos.
Perhaps they could do Belle epoque as well while there at it, and a lot more Spanish films overall.

Luna is such a tremendously underrated filmmaker. There is a Spanish-language podcast devoted to him, and the man who oversees it is basically THE expert on his life and work

Aside from his masterpiece Anguish, the only Luna film I liked was The Tit & the Moon. The way the ridiculousness is woven into a sincere coming-of-age drama felt organic.

What's the podcast? I saw Anguish a decade ago, but then sort of ignored Luna until about two years ago and was profoundly moved by everything I saw. Golden Balls is really a new personal favorite of mine.beamish14 wrote: Wed Apr 23, 2025 4:42 pmeerik wrote: Wed Apr 23, 2025 10:49 am4K UHD disc would be great. According to this interview with Rich Guay from 2023, the rights to The Secret of Roan Inish were in limbo for years because the copyright holder, Peter Newman Productions, had ceased to exist and the owner had passed away. He made it sound like John Sayles and Maggie Renzi had only recently recovered the rights. I wouldn't be surprised if they only started working on the Criterion release after getting the rights back some time in 2022.

Given Criterion's relationship with Charles Burnett, does anyone think they'll pick up The Glass Shield from Miramax?

Spotted at the Blu-ray.com forum, Jeff Goldblum mentioned that they recorded a new commentary for Isle of Dogs during an Konbini Video Club interview

Glad they're finally getting it out of the way so they can get to the real jewels of this recent Wes Anderson run.

This is simply the next one in line. That's how far behind they are

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
Considering that Stephen Rales is a big part of Indian Paintbrush I'm kind of surprised they didn't get Wes Anderson back on the schedule sooner. My theory for why they've fallen so far behind on Wes films is that he has been too busy making more films to contribute to special features for Criterion releases. Anyway, I remember loving Isle of Dogs in the theater. I'm another one in the 'Moonrise Kingdom' party but I've generally enjoyed all of his recent films.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
One advantage to falling behind on Anderson's films is that they can release BD and UHD simultaneously instead of going back to upgrade (as I'm sure they'll eventually do for most of his earlier films).
I'm also in the Moonrise Kingdom as his best post-Tenanbaum film, but then I also liked The French Dispatch far more than most others seemingly do.

I was going to respond in the Quarantined thread before it got locked, but I wonder if there being fewer 4Ks is because of Trump tariffs plus pressing in Mexico…
Anyhow, potentially just The Burmese Harp for me. Great lineup though regardless.

Re: Criterion Discussion and Random Speculation Volume 7
I think it’s just that August is a relatively smaller month for Criterion so they typically don’t put out that many 4Ks, for comparison, this month and August had 3 4K titles only compared to the otherwise very 4K centered months before and afterwards.rrenault wrote: Fri May 16, 2025 5:11 pm I was going to respond in the Quarantined thread before it got locked, but I wonder if there being fewer 4Ks is because of Trump tariffs plus pressing in Mexico…
