Janus posted a picture of Hal Chase, Jack Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg on twitter earlier. If Burroughs and Ginsberg are indeed the people depicted, best I can figure is that this is a clue for Kerouac: King of The Beats

So, summing what we know and don’t know about this clue:

Objective Observations:
- Leather Jacket
- Fedora
- Two Crowns / Kings
- 8 Point Star
- 5 Point Star
- Thought/Dream Bubble
- The older man looks like William S. Burroughs
- The bearded man looks like Francis Ford Coppola / Jerry Garcia
- They are sitting on a park bench with seemingly no shoes.

Personal Feelings:
- I still think that the older man looks like Leon Gast
-I don’t think the bearded man is Ginsburg because Ginsberg was bald

Can we at least agree bad clue. I mean, if it was really for Gast why not have a photo album with two kids as kings instead?

Definitely seems like a bad clue. No one has come up with a compelling answer for who the left guy is, which means it's someone not especially recognizable (and if it's supposed to be Burroughs, then that jacket is a poor choice). And if the two people aren't supposed to be anyone in particular, then it's a bad idea to make one of them look SO MUCH like Francis Ford Coppola.

Given that Janus posted this picture at about the same time as Criterion sent their clue this morning, I think we have a winner.

This has to be it even if Ginsberg doesn't look right.

The picture of Ginsberg looks right, back when he was in Kerouac’s circle. Have a look at this video of Ginsberg with Kerouac, along with some of the other beats, in 1959.

If it is Burroughs and Ginsberg, then of the numerous Beat documentaries, The Beat Generation: An American Dream from 1986 fits the clue better than most.

Except that then loses the whole "king" connection (although it does have "Dream" in it...)

So then was the original guess of a Gast dual-release on the right track? Except, rather than for Gast, a dual-release of beat generation documentaries?

So a Beat Generation set featuring An American Dream and King of the Beats...maybe?

This is the first thing proposed after thirteen pages of guessing that sounds plausible

If that’s what it’s for, then yes. If it’s anything else guessed in here, it’s worse. If it’s something else we still haven’t guessed that fits better, it’s passable (but will never be good, since this would just prove the film in question was too obscure to be worthy of clueing and/or the clue too obtuse)

Yes, it looks like these titles are the best guess yet. Of course, if Kerouac is the King of the Beats, then why do Burroughs and Ginsberg have the crowns? Whatever, awful clue and it honestly stopped being fun pretty quickly. I guess Joe Eszterhas really did come again!

They don't, they can only fantasize about having them because Kerouac is the king.

What about a Gast dual release: When We Were Kings and The Grateful Dead Movie.
