I want to give Fincher the benefit of the doubt, but the trailer makes it seem like schmalztier version of Coppola's execrable Youth Without Youth.

The recycling of Elfman's Edward Scissorhands score doesn't help matters.

i will admit that the recycled music bugged me a lot when watching the trailer. but the film has an eerie feel to it and it is fincher.

i will give him the benefit of a doubt.

Where in the trailer was that? I can't admit to ever finishing Edward Scissorhands. Scared me too much as a kid. Still can't watch it.

It almost bugged me as much as Clint Mansell's music being ripped for different films.

The Mist was good, but c'mon, did they really need to use The Fountain soundtrack for the trailer?

Shows what I know about classical music! It does have a similar sound to the opening of Edwards Scissorhands though. And I still think it makes the movie look schmaltzy.

I think Pitt grew up in Missouri, though. Missouri is half-Southern, I suppose.

My point, however, is that the accent that Pitt is displaying in that trailer just doesn't sound like any authentic Southern accent I've ever heard. (And I've lived for extended periods in both Kentucky and North Carolina.) To my ears, the most typical Southern accent sounds more or less like Warren Oates.

Fitzgerald's original short story takes place in Baltimore, Maryland. So my immediate impression is that this is just another example of Hollywood gratuitously setting a story in the Deep South for no apparent reason -- except perhaps to make it seem slightly more "gothic" or "exotic." Give me a break!

EDIT: Upon rewatching the trailer, the accent I'm most reminded of is this one!

Re: the accents

All I can say is that my family's from Maine/Mass, and I grew up with both the rural and the urban New England accent, but I've never, ever seen it done well in a film. I can't imagine how phony Hollywood's version of the Southern accent sounds to local ears.

Looked rather filmic on the early YouTube leak, but in 1080p I can definitely see the digital origins for this one - much more than on Zodiac.

I'm surprised so many people said it looked 'un-Fincher'. The look of this film looks to me very much like that of Zodiac. I suppose both these films don't really look like anything he's made before though.

That said, the film looks great. I'm guessing it will be a lot better received than Zodiac was, and it wouldn't surprise me if it picks up a bunch of Oscar nominations.
