Umm, it's projected video, hence it looks video-y. Even the most sophisticated video projector can't disguise this. That may change when laser projection starts being used.

I went to see it, and it is definitely an HD source. While the resolution itself was pretty good, every time the camera moved (and when characters moved quickly), there was a significant amount of both jerkiness and flickering that went a long way to ruining the experience. Is this kind of thing common with HD? Does it have to do more with the equipment or the transfer itself? Also, some of the colors (reds, greens mostly) looked blown out and video-like.

What you're describing sounds like there was something seriously wrong with the setup they were using.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with this set, and if it'll be a hassle to get a booklet from Criterion. I've emailed a couple of the addresses on the site, but being Xmas break no one is in.

Shouldn't be a problem. (I'm assuming you bought it directly from Criterion, otherwise you should send it back to the retailer and get a new copy).

The booklet is - barring exceptional circumstances such as yours - located in the television part of the box, just behind the chapter selection.

I didn't buy the product from Criterion. I bought from a canadian book retailer online, and they are currently out of stock on the item. It'll be a while before they can get me a new one. I have the discs, and they are fine, just want the booklet to complete the set. Do you think they will send it to me even is i haven't bought from them? it is a criterion product after all.

Email "Jon Mulvaney" at [email protected] and request a replacement booklet. They don't send them overseas, but I think Canada will be no problem.

I recently purchased the set in the DVD Planet sale, and it too was missing the booklet. I emailed Jon Mulvaney and received the booklet 3 days later. They should accommodate you.

I gave the Big Set to my old lady as a gift this year and it too did not have a booklet. I shot CIA Director Casey *cough* oops sorry I mean "Mr Mulvaney" a line and he said CC will reissue another when they reopen this coming week.

Seems, I now see, to be an edition-printing-wide problem, which is why I didn't bother returning it from whence it came... as CC are generally known to be good about this sort of thing.

I'm a Canuck as well with the exact same problem (received the F+A set yesterday without a booklet), and you have nothing to worry about, whtm0197: I've received replacement booklets from CC on numerous occasions quickly and with no hassles. I expect this time will be no different.

It must have been a defect of the projection. I saw the HDCAM version of Fanny and Alexander at the San Rafael Film Center a couple of months ago and it looked phenomenal. I saw none of the effects you mention, the presentation looked very filmic (I was quite surprised).

The new region-free, English-subbed Svensk Filmindustri Blu-ray of the theatrical version makes Criterion's DVD look like a sack of maggoty potatoes (though it looks ever so slightly horizontally stretched). Pity they didn't do the TV version.

The new transfer is absolutely luminous! A great surprise, since I always assumed (per Criterion's transfer) that the colors for this film were supposed to be desaturated. I always thought Sven Nykvist did a fine job with this film, but the new transfer really drives home the reason he won the Oscar that year - the colors (particularly the reds) just shimmer.

I have to agree with Matt; as much as I'd love to buy the SI BR, I simply far prefer the extended TV version to the point I doubt I would ever watch the theatrical cut much again.

Since this has been remastered and put out, does this mean we might see a Criterion BR reissue of this film?

The blue ray looks incredible. What an enormous improvement over the Criterion. But the again, as others have pointed out, it's not worth buying because the five hour version is the only way to watch this film.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a Criterion blue ray of the television version.

The film always looked very saturated to me, and the HDCAM version I saw in San Rafael was no exception. This is about 4 x resolution of BluRay. The HDCAM cassettes I saw had what looked to me like the Criterion logo in the corner (wink wink).
