It was the poster artwork for the theatrical restoration, almost surely designed simultaneously with the existing Criterion covers

Maybe I should clarify: I get why there's a cigarette on the cover, but I don't get why the cigarette smoke turns into a cottony, PhotoShop smudge tool Christmas tree or why the star looks like it's blasting off separately, space shuttle-style.

I think this movie is just so overstuffed that a simple Criterion-style cover just can't do it justice. I wish they would have commissioned some sort of heavily-detailed, illustrated family portrait of all the characters, or maybe of the kids. I realized something: a lot of people hated the covers of "Last Year at Marienbad" and "Monsoon Wedding," but they turned out to be based on those films' title sequences.

I don't know if it looks any better or different in person. I actually like the cover, though before this evening I had actually never seen the film.
