Re: Milestone
So is the Stella Maris sold on the Milestone site DVD-R or pressed? Just want to be sure before I take the plunge.

It's the same discs as Image released. We just have them back here.

Re: Milestone's ON THE BOWERY
DVD SAVANT review:
NEW YORK TIMES Crime Scene Article on ON THE BOWERY:Milestone Film has outdone themselves with their new Blu-ray of On the Bowery, a pioneering and wholly original independent effort that earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary of 1957. The picture has been claimed as a major inspiration by the greats of the American independent film, from documentarian Emile de Antonio to actor-turned director John Cassavetes. MIlestone's 2-Blu-ray set is officially The Films of Lionel Rogosin, Volume 1, and contains other contents just as impressive.
The 1956 quasi documentary “On the Bowery,” which filmed the area's characters, bars and flophouses, is finally being released on DVD.

Just an update from Netflix -- even with all the people adding ON THE BOWERY to their queue, it's still not enough for them. Or all the coverage we're getting this week. So! If you want to see it on Netflix, please add it to your Queue!

You're certainly fighting the good fight--Netflix doesn't even stock most new Criterion releases these days.

They have followed the same trajectory that Blockbuster took - but with a much more financial hit to the indies.swo17 wrote:You're certainly fighting the good fight--Netflix doesn't even stock most new Criterion releases these days.

Is Milestone having some kind of trouble? Their website is completely down and inaccessible. I hope nothing is wrong...

Re: Milestone
Our website is indeed down because of a virus attack. We are considering the possibilities and a real solution might be a couple weeks away. However, we are alive and well and anyone who wants to order from us can call us directly at (201) 767-3117 or (800) 603-1104.jwd5275 wrote:Is Milestone having some kind of trouble? So sorry to hear that Dennis, sounds like a bad one . . . Hope it wasn't one of those attacks that a) caused you to lose data ( or have it compromised), or b) constituted theft. Happened to a co. I once worked for and know what a real drag it can be.
Best wishesfor a speedy and complete recovery!

It was something that sent out a lot of spam email yesterday that thankfully, Ipower's website marked as Spam going out. However, rather than risk anything else, we've decided to keep it shut down until we either find the virus or build a new site. The data is there.HerrSchreck wrote:So sorry to hear that Dennis, sounds like a bad one . . . My Netflix queue is reporting that On the Bowery and Good Times Wonderful Times will be available on April 3 ... on DVD only.
I guess that's a double victory for Dennis -- a sale to Netflix, but I'll have to buy the Blu-ray eventually!
Dennis, just curious, it looks like Blockbuster is not carrying this title at all?

They just ordered last week and not too many copies (90 of each), so we're hoping they'll do streaming. But BluRay hasn't been discussed at all, so I'm guessing not.Perkins Cobb wrote:My Netflix queue is reporting that On the Bowery and Good Times Wonderful Times will be available on April 3 ... on DVD only. I'd say that the On the Bowery Blu is probably the best video release of the year so far, and I've only got through the first disc.

Re: Milestone
Seriously-- don't miss this amazing film, and obvious labor of love from Dennis and the fabulous Milestone! The elements for the film are in incredible shape and the restoration is just completely stunning.
Every single shot of this film is like a haiku . . Beyond an incredible documentary time capsule of a vanished NYC, the film has a quiet power that's very rare and almost beyond words owing to the total lack of editorialization of its images. The quietly dignified simplicity , almost an epiphany via the way the camera goes on its easy stroll thru the old boulevard of broken men. Going back to the dawn of the cinema with its kinetoscope actualities, and thenFlaherty's regional documents of the unusual corners of the world, BOWERY maintains its connection to those roots while being a film only Rogosin could have made. Every shot of this film is loaded with such pain and raucusness and hilarity and sympathy and horror and emotions so complex in their layering . . if ever a director deserved a hat doff (or sainthood) for executing the impossible complexity of simplicity (and like Flaherty's films this one went thru several failed stabs before hitting on its sublime balance) its Rogosin in this film. Despite owning the Pal release of this Bologna restoration, I'll be grabbing this blu manana!

Congratulations (and thanks!) for the truly marvellous release of On the Bowery. I'll echo the calls for a Blu-Ray upgrade for your equally marvellous edition of I Am Cuba as well as The Trial and Killer of Sheep (not sure how much benefit Blu-Ray could be to this one...but I'd buy it anyway!)

A Blu-Ray of I Am Cuba would be a day one purchase for me (and I'd hope that it'd come in the same amazing cigarbox package).

Re: Milestone
Dennis, can you give any word regarding a release date of the second volume of the Rogosin set?
...and though I have a feeling you're a bit sick of people asking about it, but has there been any new developments in the "Cut to the Chase" affair?

Re: Milestone
First, thank you all for the kind words about us and the Rogosin set. It's just Amy and I these days and work can get stressful -- especially when you find you have to come up with a new website in two weeks. (The new website should be up tomorrow with the important titles -- I'm adding as many pages as I can this week.)What A Disgrace wrote:Dennis, can you give any word regarding a release date of the second volume of the Rogosin set? ...and though I have a feeling you're a bit sick of people asking about it, but has there been any new developments in the "Cut to the Chase" affair?
We are waiting for the Cineteca di Bologna to send us the restored BLACK ROOTS along with Michael Rogosin's documentary on it. It's late, so we're late. I was hoping for July, but let's assume September.
We actually do have a DVD master and cover work for Cut to the Chase. It's just a matter of getting it done, but I suspect it will be out by fall as well.
Thanks, everybody!

I just want everybody to know that the new Milestone website is up. Two weeks from start to finish! We've lowered a lot of prices and our shipping fee. There are still a few fixes to be made, but let me know what you think of it!

Any reason why the Lionel Rogosin set was on 2 single layer discs instead of 1 dual?

Re: Milestone
I'm assuming you're talking BluRay. And the answer is that I don't know why, even though it was my decision. So I'll backtrack and take guesses.manicsounds wrote:Any reason why the Lionel Rogosin set was on 2 single layer discs instead of 1 dual?
When I start compiling everything together, I really don't know how much material I'll have in the end as bonus features. I keep thinking of acquisitions until the minute we go into production. So I probably chose two expecting that I might go even crazier than I did. Or that a two-disc set is more attractive a purchase than one. Or that my experience in BluRay is still not proficient enough to plan far ahead. Any or all of the above will do.
