Just as I suspected, October came too soon to hit 666 & they wanted it out in October. So the speculation continues.

So we're thinking the Pasolini got bumped at the last minute? Because its absence certainly leaves this as one of the most anemic months in recent memory, especially for fall.

Nice! If Kline is going to be talking about what they've done next month, maybe they'll be making their announcement next month too. If they announce Pasolini's Trilogy of Life, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Weekend, Heaven's Gate, and On the Waterfront in one month, the forum might explode!

Criterion will be debuting their restoration of Heaven's Gate at the Venice film festival.

I also emailed the Harold Lloyd estate and they told me that have signed with a new distributor and we will start to see some new releases (dvd/blu) in 2013. They are doing restoration work right now. I wonder if it's Criterion or Kino? (The two likely suspects!)

Whoa. They are going much higher profile with this than I thought. I wonder if this means that Cimino has come to terms with everything and embraced the chance to see his version widely available. I think MGM and John Kirk in particular had done a lot of work on this restoration before it got licensed to Criterion, so credit goes to him as well. If Cimino is involved, I wonder if they'll include Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate (which appears to be on YouTube in eight parts right now).

I actually hope it's Kino, if only because of how quickly they've been putting out the Keaton titles, compared to Criterion with Chaplin.

Kino makes sense, as they're running out of Keatons to put out- though, given how lame the commentaries on the earlier sets for Lloyd were, it would be nice to get some nice meaty extras, which Kino is sometimes pretty stingy about. I think the ideal for me would be if Criterion skimmed off two or three of the biggest titles, put out a nice full featured box set, and Kino cranked the rest out- though I don't think that could possibly happen.

What can Criterion release that Kino hasn't or have already?

He's saying that Kino has done ten Buster Keaton Blu-ray releases in the last three years, whereas Criterion has only done three Chaplins. Criterion has the rights to like eight more releases. He hopes that Kino has the Llloyds because they will likely come out more quickly. Obviously Criterion is putting together more comprehensive packages for the Chaplins. It depends on what your priorities are. I'll be thrilled either way.

Isn't it being handled by Sony Classics? A new print of it played at the American Cinematheque a few years ago (naturally, Kenneth Turan introduced it), and I think it was courtesy of them. They also did a restoration of MICKEY ONE, only to end up dumping in on burn-on-demand.

i just finished reading Nicholas Ray: The Glorious Failure of an American Director by Patrick McGilligan and came across a sentence that I found quite interesting:
"Bigger Than Life...was released as part of the Criterion Collection in 2010, the first of several Nicholas Ray films Criterion plans to resuscitate and market worldwide."

Giving the author the benefit of the doubt, it looks like we have multiple Ray films in the works. In a Lonely Place obviously...but what else? From IMDB it looks like Warner controls the bulk of his catalog. I would say Knock On Any Door is probably the most likely title to be licensed in addition to In A Lonely Place.

What I would really like to see is Janus acquire the Samuel Bronston titles and put out 55 Days at Peking. The Genius versions of the Bronston stuff still seems to be available on Amazon but that company has been defunct for many years now. Does the Weinstein company even still own the rights to those films? I remember hearing El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire were poor sellers so maybe they let the rights go?

Yeah, that was Twilight Time, and Sony doesn't license to Olive. 90% sure Criterion has it.

Agree that Knock On Any Door seems like a reasonable guess (perhaps a sequential spine with In a Lonely Place). I don't know if Warner actually owns Wind Across the Everglades; I think it was an independent production that they just distributed theatrically in the U.S.

If Olive is unwilling to release The Savage Innocents based on the extant elements, I wonder if the rights will go back to Paramount. Criterion is one of the few independent distributors that has the money, equipment, and resources to create a new high def scan of film elements.
