East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause

#176 Post by isakborg »

Given some of WB's choices for their occasional Blu-ray catalogue releases, you'd think [East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause] would have been released by now. Has anyone heard even the slightest rumor about either of these? Or was I asleep when the word went out?

Next year is Warner Bros. 90th anniversary, they are both popular titles,I'd surprised if they are not out in 2013.

The UK edition is $46 shipped on Amazon.co.uk... I can't imagine the U.S. release will be close to that cheap.

Nice! I seem to remember the DVD set a few years back being waaay overpriced, so this is great news.

Hopefully the start of a "Not Quite as Awful as We Were the Last Couple of Years" campaign.
October's come and gone. No news on this?
Never made it to Blu, but finally came out as a pressed DVD today with the Soderbergh doc included.

Mrs. Miniver, Dead Ringer... Warner's attitude toward B&W back catalog Blus seems to have gone an almost 180 degree conversion in the last couple of years. Promising news for the Bogie-Bacall films.

Is there seriously a market for Grand Hotel on Blu-ray? Such a dog of a film in every way. Even if you're a huge Garbo or Crawford fan, I'd imagine there are 10 films from each you'd rather see on Blu-ray before this one.

I know a shocking amount of people that should know better who love the film for the stars.

Grand Hotel was released on DVD before the Garbo and Crawford sets, so I assume there must be an audience to it. And it's definitely more prestigious for them to release a Best Picture winner than, say, Queen Christina.

That said, I think they could've released Anna Karenina to captalize on the new version.

Dial 'M' For Murder will be presented in 1.85:1 on the Blu-ray, unlike the academy version offered by the R1 Warners. Commence aspect ratio in-fighting... now

If only they could find an AR that cropped Bob Cummings out of most of his scenes.

As I already have the DVD, this is great news. With the alternate AR on blu, I'll be able to do my own in-home comparisons and decide on the one I prefer.

Warner never releases anything in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, at least with what I've seen on DVD or Blu-ray.

1.85:1 / 1.78:1 are used interchangeably on home video.

Regardless, documentation shows that 1.85:1 is the OAR for Dial M.

There is actually a slight difference between the two (thin black bars for a 1.85:1 film on a 16:9 screen), which can often be missed if your TV overscans. I think manicsounds' point was that WB presents films that should be in 1.85:1 in 1.78:1 so that they completely fill the screen.

Yup. Either they open up the top and bottom a little bit, or slice off the sides a bit, depending on the title to fit it to the 1.78:1 ratio.

I know the technical methods of what is going on, guys. :)

I'm just saying that it's been 15 years of Warner DVDs/BDs wherein they say 1.85:1 on packaging but actually present it 1.78:1. It's a minimal enough difference that it generally is regarded as correct (same with 1.37:1 Academy Ratio films being presented 1.33:1).
